Flames were on the right track to pump and dump before his knee injury. Good luck to him!

You just know it’s going to work for them and they’ll flip him into a first

My bet is he won't get injured, will put up 20 goals and net the Pens some picks for the 2026 draft

Quite likely. Not sure the Flames would have dealt him had he stayed healthy last year, though. With them chasing the playoffs he would have probably remained on the roster. There is a future cost to the team’s attempt to “thread the needle”.

Good move for the Pens with where they are at in their rebuild. That flames are past the point of needing to fill roster spots with vets with the intention of flipping them at the deadline - simply because the have multiple young players knocking on the door who should have the opportunity to run with those spots. The Pens have few NHL-ready prospects and they need to start stocking their cupboards. Signing Mantha to a one-year deal, playing him on Crosby’s wing to inflate his value and then trading him for a 1st/2nd/3rd round pick is a good move for them.

That seems like a lot for a player who had to sign a show me contract and got hurt 10 games in.

Good for him. The flames had an option to do the same cuz we had the cap. We chose to help create room for our young guys.

Mantha has to be one of the biggest impact 13 game Flames with a Gordie Howe hat trick against the Nucks and a game winner against the Oilers.
Best of luck in Pittsburgh and fully expect them to get the decent trade deadline return that didn’t work out for Calgary.

Question, if he earns his bonuses, it gets subtracted from his teams cap the next year. If he gets traded at the deadline and earns his bonuses, does the acquiring team get stuck with that?

If Mantha played the rest of the season, even to the trade deadline, the Flames probably get one or two more points and make the playoffs.
