I didn't think it was necessary to re-sign him, but it doesn't bother me either. I believe he would have got a similar deal from another team and there is something to be said for keeping players that want to stay. He was a net positive for the team last season.

Joel did well staying here. He can provide some stability and establish himself. Next deal could be his payday

He'll be 36 when this deal expires. It's unlikely that his next contract will be worth more.

Taking that into account, this matches the eye test for me. Hanley is a canny vet, and I believe he'll make a great partner for someone like Parekh or Brzustewicz while they get accustomed to NHL hockey.

I think fans also underrate what it means to have heart and soul type of vets on a team. It instills a higher standard of commitment, sacrifice, and determination.
Just like there's value in having Coleman and similar forwards rub off on the kids coming up.

If Hanley continues to play like he did with Weegs last season you cannot be mad a this deal.
He can easily be dealt at this year or next year’s TDL. It’s a contract that could easily be moved to a contender, and I’d argue he could get a 3rd/2nd depending on how he fares.

I don’t understand the point of this signing. Last year was the most games he ever played in a single season at the NHL level. At the age of 33. It was 53 games which is over 20% of the games he has ever played in the NHL.
Just let solovyov or kuznetzov or porier or bean play.
It really makes no sense on a defense that is willing to let Ras go without an “nhl” backup to re-sign Hanley. I’m irrational irritated by this.

Half your D can't be rookies or guys with very little NHL experience.

Sure but a 34 year old with 240 career games played doesn’t sound like insulation to me.
He was “fine” last year.

I had assumed that the Flames were thinking that they were getting another top 4D, but things fell through? I thought that the Hanley deal was on top of that, but maybe that other defencemen was actually Hague?
I am revising my earlier post: Not only is Hanley's deal a great bargain, I am 100% happy he has re-signed here in Calgary. I was afraid this signing would block a spot on the team for one of the kids, but it sets it up nicely for the Flames to rotate a player through while providing the goalies with decent support.
Hanely - Weegar
Bahl - Parekh
Rotation - Pachal/rotation
Bean
Rotation of Bean, Solovyov, Poirier, Kuznetsov and Brzustewicz - and along with Grushnikov if he is ready to see some NHL time as part of his development.
While I think people are too hard on Bean, he is 27 and has been in the league a while now. I am not sure there is a lot more room for him to grow, even if he is just entering his prime as a defencemen. I think he is fine as depth and as the 13th, who gets to rotate-in along with the youth.
Will be curious to see which defencemen stick this year out of camp. My bet (outside of Parekh of course) is Solovyov. I think it is clear that the Flames are looking for more sandpaper and 'harder to play against' type, and Solovyov can definitely really blow guys up, and he is undoubtedly the most physical of the bunch listed.
I think Morin will show nicely in camp as well, and maybe he will get some time up in his first year as a pro. Probably not, but I still remember how good he looked 2 camps ago. These kids can really learn from Hanley, Weegar and even Bahl. It really does make sense as to why they brought Seabrook in - kids are going to need lots of coaching this season.

Joel Hanley sounds like a guy you'd listen play a set at a Country and Western bar.

Either or both of these guys could be NHL players but we might never know if they never are given a spot because we keep looking for guys like Bean, Hanley, Barrie, etc.

I think if they don’t give that group a shot they should start moving them for other assets.
Kuznetsov
Brzustewicz
Poirier
Solovyov

Wait, you want to move Brzustewicz after one year in the AHL?

Hanley is a ridiculously good veteran damn you can bury with bad zone starts and he's gonna suppress shots like a mad man.
Getting upset over this player or contracts is silly.

They'll get a shot in training camp. That's the main battle of training camp as far as I'm concerned. The Flames will have 2 established D, and 4D making $1.75M or less, with their jobs on the line. So I could see 2 of the D you listed + Parekh making the team full time by the end of next season. The rest will likely go unclaimed on waivers, which should be a good indicator as far as their trade value is concerned.
PS: Out of that group Brzustewicz still doesn't require waivers to be sent down.

This is a very good signing for a depth dman.

You won't get much if anything for them, once they are required to pass through waivers.
Calgary has lots of open dmen spots, and if they cannot earn those, there is little value here, every team has their own guys like this.

I think it's the willingness to let Andersson go is the reason for signing him. They need a dman who is defensively responsible, especially playing with a rookie who is all offense.

You can't really rotate that many prospects through unless there are injuries or some vets moved out. Kuznetsov, Solovyov, and Poirier have to go through waivers now so you cannot just bounce them up and down from the Wranglers and you cannot carry that many on the active roster because of the logjam of 7th D vets.
Right now the group has 6 vets inked into the NHL group and Parekh because he is undeniable. That means there is room for 1 prospect that we have developed for ~5 years to make the team and the others are stuck behind Hanley, Bean, and Miromanov. (Also frustrating is that Hanley was just signed as a "7th D" but posters are all locking him in with Weegar.)
???? - Weegar
Bahl - Parekh
Hanely - Pachal
Bean, Miromanov
I don't mind the addition of Hanley but I hope the Flames then unload or demote Bean and Miromanov. I would rather see something like this to start next season:
Bahl - Weegar
Solovyov - Pachal
Hanley - Parekh
X: Kuznetsov, Poirier
And then basically put it in the blender often to see what you can get out of each prospect. (Also, with this group Seabrook would be really earning his keep)
