Byram is just... not very good. Whenever I watch him, I'm always left thinking that I'm not really sure what he does well. I don't think he moves the needle at all on this team.
I think trading him would kind of be similar to trading for Hamonic back in the day, but we don't even have our Gaudreau and Tkachuk yet.
I'd be very wary on what the Flames would give up in a deal for him. If it's anything involving our 2026 1st (I wouldn't even give up the Vegas pick up Byram), I'm praying the Flames lose this war.

I don't think Byram really makes any sense for Calgary.

Kevin Bahls Jfresh card looks worse (29%) than when we acquired him (33%).
Not trashing the whole concept, but those cards aren't the be-all, end-all either.

24 is just when D men start stepping into their own. Though I worry that he was over exposed in an awful Buffalo franchise.

How do you figure? No guys that can provide offence on the left side of the defence and a team that struggles to score and it makes no sense? Really?

Bryam generates offence better than most, and that’s precisely what the Flames lack. I can see a fit there.

Well, part of that would be because Bahl and Andersson were not a good pairing.
I look forward to Andersson not being here so that we can blow that pairing up and see what Bahl can do with someone else.

all I'm saying is that Flames fans are overwhelmingly happy with him signing a long-term deal, whereas the card pretty much says he sucks. Lots of factors to be considered when it comes to judging a player.

Byram - Weegar
Bahl - Parekh
Would be a pretty nice top 4 to build around. I guess the question is does this block a spot for Brzustewicz long-term?
Hanley, Pachal, Bean, and Miromanov are all replacement level spot-fillers at this point, as good as Hanley and Pachal have been in their elevated roles. If any of Brz, Morin, Grushnikov, Solovyov, or Kuznetsov play their way onto the team, the 3rd pairing with Pachal/Hanley/Bean seems like a good spot to start on.

It depends on the acquisition cost. Adding a 40 point defenseman probably doesn't help the overall offense that much. Not that incremental improvement isn't worth pursuing, but the increment needs to reflect the acquisition cost (i.e. not trading someone like Zary to get him as was suggested).

I would hedge that Byram's defensive game would improve playing under Huska, if there's one thing you can absolutely say about this organization, they've done a hell of a job with young d-men over the last few years IMO.
With that in mind, if we got Byram now for a reasonable deal and in future he had to be dealt, I would go out on a limb and say he would have even more value down the road than he does now, after playing in a good system and being force-fed PP time and opportunity here to be a top 1-2 D. Makes alot of sense for the Flames.

The Flames could actually really use a guy that can play the puck on their backend, with Andersson likely leaving, but they have a ton of younger guys that would that opportunity, too

I think he'll cost too much and already coasts a bit too much on his reputation. I liked the fit when he first went to Buffalo but I don't buy that he's worth giving up anything of significant value for at this point. If it's for a huge discount, fine.

Like the idea of him but we just cannot give up offence for defense right now

Going into a year where the Flames could see a drop-off again and have a decently high pick in a good draft, I'd gladly take the offence-first d-man over the stay-at-home guys.
At least make the games exciting! Parekh/Byram in OT would be fun to watch. Entertainment value during a rebuild is also important.

The acquisition cost is key
I see the intrigue of the following d-core long term:
Byram - Weegar
Bahl - Parekh
Morin - Brzustewicz
But only as long as Byram doesn't cost too much.
It's also a bit small long term, if you compare it to teams that have won the cup the d-core is all bigger

If the Flames can get off of Pospisil as part of this, should go ahead. He's a warrior but that style means he's one or two more big hits away from being out of the league, like Ferland was when Treliving traded him to Carolina.
