No problem with the deal itself cost wise but would way rather see the flames use that ice time to develop a younger lhd. 34 year old plug who won't be here when they win anything

meh. Hanley has been decent and it's a fair deal, but as others have said I'd rather have those spots for younger players.

Was pretty impressed with how solid he was. Him and Weegar were a very good pairing.

I like it because it effectively finishes the build on the back end, so no trades or mid-tier player overpayments on the UFA market.
Hanley - Weegar
Bahl - Parekh
Solovyov - Pachal
Miromanov/Bean/Kuznetsov
A defensive core perfectly set for a year of regression, while keeping the hardworking positive culture in place.

Good news all around. Not sure there are many other players who can be found for under $2M who can step into the top 4 comfortably, sit for long periods of time without losing much of a step, and are among the most popular players in the room. I really like Hanley and I'm glad he is sticking around.
He and Weegar have great chemistry. 57% expected goals as a pair is not something you dismiss without a clear upgrade.

If there's a logjam, it'll be the other UFA vet(s) we sign that are the issue, not Hanley IMO.

Totally agree. Perfect 7 or 8D for eating popcorn if the youth excel. Could even demote to minors and not fret if we lose him to waiver wire as his AAV will not detract from others claiming him.
A little D depth always good. As long as you don't expend draft picks for it.

Why does everyone keep leaving Brzustewicz off the depth charts?

Hanley re-signed at a relative bargain in terms of dollars and terms.
I do think it creates a roadblock. Andersson is moving on, but unless this is the rumored "Top 4" defencemen for the Flames, I would expect the pairings to be:
X - Weegar
Banhl - Parekh
Hanely - Pachal
Bean
Solovyov, Kuznetsov and Poirier all need waivers and Brzustewicz could probably use some NHL time as well. I do think Kuznetsov and Poirier are very likely to pass through waivers, though Solovyov may not given last season. Either way, these kids need to get some ice-time at the NHL level to take the next step. Hopefully a spot is kept open for them to rotate through this year so each of them get reps at the NHL level.

I don't think it's a logjam because if any of the kids outplay Bean, Pachal, or Miromanov they will take their spot.
The only 3 locks I see are Weegar, Bahl and Hanley.
And then there are injuries.

This might be an indication that the UFA LD(s) they were looking at didn't want to come to Calgary.

Decent depth signing and competition for the prospects as well. Not a player the coaches will have a thought time benching for prospects.
Looks like the 4/5/6 could be the same this year though to start.

I'm not suggesting they build around Bean but he was pretty solid last year in his role.
1st in xGF% and just behind Hanley and Weegar in xGA60.
Handled the puck like hand grenade though.
Generally outplayed his perception in my mind.
