If the Oilers wanted 8 years of Bouchard's prime locked up, it would have been 11.5-12 million easy.

Why?

Evan Bouchard is ####ing elite. He's elite of elite.

Not only is he an at-minimum 65+ point per year, right shot defenseman, he ####ing drives the play.

JFresh model has him at 97% in terms of value. Dom at the Athletic has Bouchard as the NHL's 5th best D man.

Yeah, he's getting paid. But we have to deal with it.

Why did Ekblad take 6.1? Because Ekblad is literally worth less than half of Bouchard and he's on a deep ####ing hockey team.

Oiler fans can be mad at a lot of contracts handed out by this organization over the last decade.

This Bouchard deal (in comparison to Nurse, Lucic, Jack Campbell and so many more) is not one they should be mad at.

There are like 2-3 D men in the NHL I'd contemplate taking on my team over him: Q. Hughes, Cale Makar and maybe Rasmus Dahlin. All those dudes are gonna be getting absolutely paid.

This. And it may sound like sour grapes from a rival fanbase but that last run was so much due to luck. Now - every team that makes the final needs luck on their side but the Oilers took it to another level. Simply based on the first round. They were done. It was over and on the verge of a sweep if Byfield could have chipped a puck out. The discussion would have been the oilers getting embarrassed by the kings. But a mental fart from Byfield saved them.

Based on that bit of luck, they are running it back. Just paying everyone more.
