A piece of Rasmus' calibre shouldn't be traded for a rental price (which is what Vegas previously gave up for Hanifin because they were also the only team on him)
Trading a guy with term, which CGY should've done here, sidesteps that problem entirely. Teams typically aren't as concerned with how extension talks will go when they're a year or more in advance

Big piece would have to come back in trade I suppose..
Eichel for Rasmus 1 for 1
Has to be done now to make sense.

Yup just auction him off as a rental now and screw the Extension.
He can get 6 years from Vegas next year as a UFA if that's what he wants.
Flames players are pulling this stuff because Flames play nice and did it with Hanifin and Tkachuk.
I can forgive the Lindholm and Hanifin stuff but it was obvious to auction off Andersson at the 2024 draft with 2 years at 50% retention and Conroy flubbed this up.

The return of getting him for one year versus getting him for two years is not that substantial. I don’t know why people are freaking out about this.

If I had that choice I would be picking LA easily over Vegas.

Hanifin trade is still alive. Maybe all this tinkering will blow up in the Knights' face and all of Mark Stone's sick leave will catch up to him!

I think we'll get better value for him at the deadline anyways, he didn't have a great year due to injury

It goes back to what I said a couple days ago.
- Players are increasingly leveraging all tools to manufacture where they go. This includes strategic application of NTCs and if they don't have that, they just make it clear they won't sign with the acquiring team
- The have teams, like Vegas, will benefit as this pushes down prices. And teams like Vegas will throw their weight around to benefit from that.
- Have not teams will have more challenges as they can't even recoup full value for their players, or have to move them much earlier in the process.
It's going to create some significant imbalance in the league. And don't think this will only be limited to established players. We will see this start to happen even more with drafted prospects.
|
Agree with all of this but at least prospects will be aligned on rights. I think Conroy will still get a decent return but I think it’s pretty much capped there now. I get keeping Andersson if the other actions weren’t in line with a rebuild but to have a pile of cap space with no real moves to improve the roster is counter intuitive and then they want futures in return. Seems a little directionless

Pietrangelo almost $9m cap will go on LTIR, there were rumours Vegas would looks to trade Karlsson, so both of those free up almost $15m of room (assuming no salary coming back) so that gives them about $17m in total with their other $2m in space they have according to PuckPedia

If this keeps on going as is, Andersson is going to go very quickly from fan favorite to fan villain.
I understand that he wants some choice in where he ends up long term, as is his right, but there are lots of good teams and cities to go to. This is beginning to feel incredibly selfish on his part.

So the solution is to simply trade every player this team has that is two years out from UFA no matter what? Do you think Andersson went to Conroy last summer and said he was only interested in going to Vegas? Things change daily in the NHL. Conroy has had to deal with an immense pile of #### since becoming GM, and to me is navigating through it extremely well.
It's easy to be an armchair GM with no skin in the game and criticize decisions as new information comes to light.

To much risk waiting till the deadline, injuries is definitely a risk

They should have traded Andersson last summer so we didn't end up in this situation. Did Andersson's expiring contract sneak up on them? Did they not realize he was turning 29 and no longer fit this team's age window? Did they not realize he was going to want a substantial raise? These are all things many of us have pointed out for a while and management should have been proactive about. Simple as that

Yeah this is frustrating.
I can forgive Craig somewhat - only somewhat - for this happening twice because I can see he's a guy who probably tends to take others at face value and trust what they're telling you.
I'm a person that tends to give people the benefit of the doubt the first time and can imagine Connie is probably similar in a sense. And I imagine the initial conversations with Andersson's camp were not indicative of him now only wanting to extend in Vegas.
It's naivety on CC's part, for sure, and echoes the whole "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" trope. I hope that this is the lesson that hammers it in for him.
Even if the return is less, it might honestly be better for him and his growth as a GM to just trade Andersson anywhere else as a rental and get the best deal he can there. Send a bit of a message.

You just put it to Rasmus that you will trade him as a rental and he loses the extra two years he would have been able to sign for if he worked with you as a sign and trade. See if that changes his mind a bit.
