But I was told that the only reason a person wouldn't want to live in LA is because they hate Mexicans?

If you listen to the clip (it's about 1:18:00 into the full show on YouTube), Dreger is talking about it more from the context of LA and Holland's plan to improve the Kings, so it's possible he didn't get the information from Nonis. Although, I assume he would have run it past Nonis anyway to get the Flames' perspective on it.

Hanifin 2.0. The time to trade him was last year when he didn't have this leverage, but in typical Flames fashion they wanted to hang on to take a run at 9th place.

I don’t doubt you’re right about Conroy’s sophistication. I have faith in Conroy. But I think it’s reasonable Conroy may have stated, “Andersson’s available. This is our price: _______.” And the effect of that statement was to create a market of teams willing to pay the Flames’ price only if they could extend Andersson. So, I’m saying in this scenario, Conroy should send out a new statement as to price to broaden the market.

No, in this scenario the posters on this board should hit pause on their reactions until sometime next week. Freaking out prior to the main event (Free Agent Frenzy) demonstrates a real lack of understanding of the situation.
For example, "Hanifin 2.0" cannot happen for 8 more months when we get to the Trade Deadline.
Hot takes thread is ice cold compared to the last 20 pages of this thread.

Of course he had this leverage then. He can say he's not going to sign with any team at any time. To think this wasn't an option for him last year is silly.

Are Detroit and Utah clearing space for free agents or for Andersson?

The acquiring team gets him for 2 years with retention, which of course affects the return even if they don’t know whether they can re-sign him (maybe playing for a new team opens his eyes, who knows, but at that point it’s no longer the Flames’ problem to deal with).
I would like to think there were lessons learned from Hanifin with respect to being more ruthless with asset management, but the longer this drags out the more likely it seems that nothing was learned at all. It sounds to me like they’re trying to play the nice guy again and spin it as “building a winning culture” and “improving Calgary’s reputation” (note: actually winning at some point would solve both these problems).

Hertl? Not a bad option, but doesn't fit the age range that the Flames need.

That's it.

California's population has grown the last two years and the depopulation story has been largely a myth.

I do wonder about Connelly. Flames would have most likely interviewed him last year at the combine and probably a few times before as there was a chance he would fall to their pick.
Not a position of need, but he's definitely Vegas' top prospect and has a fair chance to develop into a first line winger.

You have to feel a bit of apprehension at this point, no doubt. Don't begrudge Andersson at all, as this may be his one and only shot to use the leverage that UFA provides.
I have always looked at Andersson much in the same way as Hamonic back in the day - players that were overvalued because they had such team-friendly deals. Though Andersson is much better than Hamonic was, I pegged his value at that level. Lots of people were saying that that was the best time to trade Andersson.
However, we don't know what he is going to be traded for yet. Until then, while I have my own apprehension, I don't really think it is time to pull on any alarm bells, not that they would help. It is just a complication that Conroy has to work through with Andersson.
I will just be hoping for the best, prepare myself for the worst, and I am sure it will come out somewhere between those two points. I doubt it will exceed my expectations (1st + two 2nds worth), but there is no way Andersson walks for free, nor do I feel the Flames are going to miss out on a large part of his value. It isn't ideal - and there is no way to spin this as ideal - but I don't think it is anywhere close to being a disaster either.

LeBrun is reporting Andersson's preference is to be in Vegas.
"as of Monday, the team that tops his list, league sources told The Athletic, is the Vegas Golden Knights.
Which explains why Vegas and Calgary have had numerous discussions over the past week, but still no trade has been made, as the Flames clearly haven’t been excited yet with what the Golden Knights have put on the table.
It makes sense that the Flames believe they should get more in a trade if Andersson is signed to an extension as part of it (he’s got one more year on his deal). But Andersson appears to be a little picky in where he would sign, which is obviously his right, as he would be forgoing a chance at unrestricted free agency 12 months from now.
Right now, it sounds like it’s pretty much Vegas for him.
My understanding is that the Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings were among the teams with trade interest, but Andersson wasn’t ready to talk extension with those teams, so a trade didn’t materialize"
