It always seems like most teams can get value for their players but there are always a hurdle for the Flames. Is this just plain bad luck or the Flames are just not great at managing assets. For instance, what would Andersson's value be if he was traded last off-season for 50% retained. A team would have gotten him for 2 years.

That's exactly the thing, I don't hold any of this against Raz at all. Dude is making a massive life decision, and I think the Flames should just walk back from the idea of trying to extract that maximum value with the extension and just focus on what Raz really is - which is a good top-4 defenceman, on an excellent value contract that we can retain 50% on to make it even sweeter. That should get a decent value return.
Let everything else get sorted out by Raz and his agent.
...on the flip side, we're definitely hearing that the Flames are gaining respect around the league from players in how they treat players. Maybe that Hanifin situation added to that good rep, and that's part of Conroy building the brand of the Flames? Letting it be known that if things don't work out in Calgary for you, so long as you're a good pro the Flames will work to make sure you're happy as you exit (even if that means taking less in a trade)?

Well that's a shame. As an individual and an employee I applaud Ras for using all the leverage available to him to choose his preferred destination.
As a fan of the Flames this sucks but quelle surprise we find ourself here again. The best laid plans of mice and all that.

As someone who relocated to California a few years ago for work, I absolutely understand the poster’s statement. I like it here and intend to stay, but the cost of living is unpleasant, crime is ridiculous (just ask my wife) and things like traffic and crowding make much of the state enjoyable. I know a number of people who have left, or intend to leave for a variety of reasons, and most I know defy the routine, stereotypical categorizations that are asserted.
It works for me, but California is not everyone’s cup of tea, for a variety of reasons.

Wouldn't we be going through the same thing if we decided to trade Raz earlier? Was his NMC not active yet?

So it’s the Hanifin situation all over again. Granting the player space because they think they can maximize return by getting it to go with an extension, when all that really does is turn the table and effectively give the player a full-NTC which doesn’t actually improve trade value.
Just trade him as a player with 50% retained on a 1-year contract and be done with it.
|
Right but that's the default, and the default hasn't eroded at all.
You trade a player with a year left, retain salary and move on. By trying to do a deal to a team that he will sign with might get you more, and if not you still have the default.
Not speaking to you on this part ... but I think some fans have a tough time managing their desire for newsy trades, and lash out at things with almost zero knowledge of what's going on.
Gets old.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

It's not Hanifin at all as there is roughly 250 more days to the trade deadline.

"Whopper of an offer..."
"Won't extend..."
Wonderful
I'm ready for a probable late 1st rounder and a Miromanov equivalent return again.

He only has a 6 team no trade list. Teams could have been more willing to trade for him at the deadline thinking they could get him to sign. Definitely less of an issue last offseason

Tkachuk did us a huge favour and it’ll forever skew perception of related trade options.

I doubt he is around before the season starts, however its very similar,
For example cross off LA from the list,
NTC how has 7 and growing

NTC is still 6
They can trade him to LA if they want.
2 years ago this player was traded as a rental
Hanifin dictated where he wanted to go with days left until a deadline killing the chances of a higher than rental return.
Calgary still has the rental. Still has the retention slot. Can always trade him as a full year rental which has value.
Too much doom and gloom on this in my mind.
Massive over reaction.
But then I'm not on the site everyday building up trade scenarios and setting myself up for disappointment. I like the decision to move on from an asset management decision given his contract demands, and am curious to see where he goes and what he gets.

Do I have this right.
Anderson only has a 6 team NMC.
With respect to the other 26 teams, the issue is most of the deals are contingent on the fact that Andersson wont sign with them after this year?
The fear is that he is doing what Hanifin did and making it obvious he only wants to play for 1 or 2 teams driving his return down?

The NTC is almost irrelevant in this case.
That because his value is only highest with an extension.
With that said his value would have been highest 2 seasons ago, but Flames were busy trying to compete and it wasn’t even a thought back then I’m certain.
