I get why teams take these shots on big dmen, but I would have rather they bet on the skill of the kid who scored 70 goals in 120 WHL games instead of somebody who's upside is 3rd pairing dman

You know you are drafting right when in the past two drafts, really the only complaints/doubts about a random 3rd pick who has zero offense but, if he makes it, could essentially replicate a tunnel of death.

Was probably the best D on the world juniors team before an injury if I remember correctly. Played in the NHL but maybe fizzled out? not sure if injuries or talent were the final nail in the coffin.

If he doesn’t work out as a hockey player, he can always shift to outside linebacker.

This feels similar to Keegan Kanzig in the third round.

Shades of Kanzig, but at least Phillips has more going for him than Kanzig in the skating and athleticism department.

Can’t criticize unless I would suggest an alternate, but I would have liked to trade this back to Vegas so they could take Nobert and then pick up 91 and 154.
Probably could have still taken Phillips there but I would have taken my secret tiny Q player.

I think one or both of Kuznetsov, and Solovyov from 2020 will turn into NHLers, and Pardy in 2004 before that, probably. Hopefully this one turns better, but yeah it seems like a high risk, low reward pick.

Put the pads on him - he will cover the entire net!

Disappointing, I was happy with the draft until now. I don't mind drafting this type of player in the second half of the draft, but in the top 3 rounds? No thanks. The first 3 rounds should be talent, talent, talent. Flames should fire the scout who recommended this. Purge this mindset.

Not a fan of these picks where there appears to be very little (or no) offensive upside.
 Hopefully he becomes Bahl 2.0

One wrinkle to add here is this guy is really good friends with Potter. This could have been a bit of a strategic move to ensure Potter remains loyal to the organization as a US born college player.
I know there were better players available but it's really just a crapshoot at that point. Might be better for the long-term to keep Potter happy since he was a main target coming in.

Flames consult with Danielle Fujita frequently when looking at players, so if the general scouting consensus is that his athleticism makes it likely his skating can improve even more, they may see something here. She’s one that can help that improvement.

He went right where many rankings had him going, so it's not like he was off the "board" or anything. It seems like a lot of people who watched him had him projected as a 3rd rounder.
