You can also say "loyalty to a franchise that gave him a chance to thrive and become an elite player".

Well this is true, especially with the raising cap. But that's generally the perspective how most people view it. Bennett contributes to wins but doesn't put up points (this season was an anomaly). Although after winning a Conn Smythe it's hard to argue even against this price tag.

Even starting next season, $8mil for a second line center won't be that bad. Add in that he literally wills his team to Stanley Cups once the playoffs start and you're looking great with that contract.

Yeah, dragging your team to a Cup tends to do that.

With a Conn Smythe as the Cherry on top.

I don't think Florida is dragged by any one player...You could have given the MVP to 3 other guys at least without much of an argument.
Bennett earned the contract though its just funny a few months ago it was being scoffed at that a team like the Flames or Leafs ect. would come along and give Bennett and 8x8. (like we have the post history to prove it)
Now its a hometown discount in Florida...big playoff run earned some big money

I wonder at this rate, is Bennett a future Hall of Famer? Two Cups, Four Nations, and a Conn Smythe... Still has a ways to go, but he might get there.

Usually you need the kind of points that he doesn’t accumulate in the regular season.

Well those, plus taxes, plus 8 years versus 7 (a competing team would have to give him 9.14M to equal the total dollars, and then only if the taxes are the same).

I'd guess with his style of play he has maybe 5 years max in him, at least at a high level, so there's clearly risk involved in giving him all that term.
That said, I'm sure both sides are very happy with this right now.

He's 100% a playoff performer...but him, Marchand, and Perry all choose a pretty good time to shoot over 21% as pending UFAs

I believe the fact that contract lengths are dropping to 7 years next year, is going to have a huge impact on guys that are negotiating this year. Bennett wanted to stay. Getting 8 years made it easier for him.
This is Andersson's last chance to get 8 years as well, you have to think that motivates him to be willing to sign with teams that are interested.
