Gastric Bypass was interesting given the home town pedigree but this is an exciting pick. His numbers could explode in upcoming year.

This is the guy I wanted.
He will end up somewhere between Gaudreau and Phillips and the journey to find out will be fun.
Great job taking BPA at 18 and 32.

I would have been happy with Reschny OR Potter at 18. Leaving this draft with both is great.

Seems a good value pick, though I know nothing of him. Tell me we're going to be alright, gang.

Wonder if they had him ranked to pick at 18 if they didn't get Reschny.

He is going to be a winger but he is one of the most skilled fastest guys in the draft. I love the pick, didn't think he would still be there at 32.

17. Cullen Potter, C (Arizona State University, NCAA)
Potter made the big decision to go to college early, and it paid off. He played around 20 minutes a night at ASU, and scouts were impressed with his play-driving abilities. He’s 5-foot-9, but his pure skill and ability to make things happen with the puck should keep him high in the draft conversation. Overall, I like his commitment to playing in all three zones, and he anticipates plays and gets himself where he needs to be better than most of the draft class. I think the ceiling is higher for Potter than many others around this part of the draft, but he needs to show he can handle the physical challenge. Fast-tracking to play at ASU early was an absolute genius move for his development and helped him push up draft boards.

Wheeler had Reschny ranked at 15 and Potter at 16 in his final rankings.

Parekh, Gridin, Reschny, Potter.
I think we'll have 3 regular NHLers there.

Love this pick! Flames need some speed. Insulate that with guys like Klapka and Battaglia.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was their next choice after Reschny at 18

Seems like a pretty solid pick and great first round for the Flames. We needed some more skilled forwards.

One thing that stands out is that all of the players on the Sun Devils team were 22/23 whereas Potter was 17.
He was a boy among men, and even at his size, he held his own and made a valuable contribution.
