Icon48 Austin Texas throws hat into NHL expansion ring. Expansion fee hits $2 billion

https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/nh...-2-billion-fee

Quote:
Four markets were already jockeying in the quest for the next NHL expansion franchise, but a fifth has recently entered the chat.

The conversation on NHL expansion beyond 32 clubs is expected to grow in the coming months with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement announced on Friday, pending expected ratification. The NHL will continue to field expressions of interest from potential markets.

The League, which informed interested parties that the expansion fee is a tidy $2 billion, updated the Board of Governors at their annual June meeting on Wednesday prior to the Draft. The four cities shared with the BOG are Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis and New Orleans.

The fifth one is Austin, Texas, according to sources, and that entry has generated buzz. Not only is it an exploding, affluent market full of transplants with a built-in geographic rival – but it’s also the only one where the NHL can be the first major pro sports league in town, which has been a huge part of their success beating others to the punch in Vegas.

Does Austin have plans to build an arena? The H-E-B Center only has capacity for 8,700.

Sure, why not. At this point they're seeing all these warmer climate cities winning almost every year and think the market has grown to be a safe enough risk

Eventually the cap will be too high and no amount of revenue sharing or money from expansion to the small markets will save them. It will just incentivize owners of these teams to sell and relocate.

This spells bad news for Ottawa and Winnipeg.

Same for SJ and Anaheim.

Saying that these cities have shown interest means little. Who is the potential owner showing interest? And do they have plans for an arena?

Except for Houston, all of those cities would need new buildings.

The NBA arenas in Indy and New Orleans are both smaller basketball-only arenas with small capacity for hockey (if they even have ice making capabilities at all).

Id love to see a team in Austin, its a very cool city. But we don't need more teams, that's just crazy.

Houston metro is 7.5 million compared to 2.5 million for Austin.

Is it supposed to mean something more? The league just mentioned six potential expansion sites to the BoG, that’s all. Nothing formal.

They have to set aside $1b for the arena as well.

Austin is the largest city in the US (or Canada) without any major league sports teams.

Austin is a premier city. Makes a lot of sense

There's probably a lot of truth in that. Having several teams in Canada gives them a lot more North American markets to consider than the other leagues.

Clearly the economics of the NHL is over my head because I can't understand how that makes sense.

The NHL has been telling prospective expansion teams that if they don't have a suitable arena they need to have an additional $1 billion in funds for a new arena.

Yes, and they are spending over half a billion USD to expand that into a suitable building.
