I don't even begin to understand how anyone could possibly be excited for this signing. 8 years...to this guy? It could be $2M, and at best, I'd still be like...yeah, I guess he plays hockey.

Just under 4m, so probably 3.9m. Great cap savings

Had to make sure they got that contract in before the new CBA kicks in and they could only lock Fredric in for 7 years. I wonder how many of the 8 years have a NMC?

Doesn’t feel real. It makes absolutely zero sense. There is no benefit to Edmonton offering this term…

Giving career 4th liners term is not smart. It's fine if it's a guy who has enough offensive upside that he might move up your lineup but Frederic isn't that. This is an absurd contract.

So they just used up most of their Kane money.

I look forward to seeing their other additions. I expect the next few weeks will be as fruitful as last season.

This deal just ends up getting better and better.

First 4 years full NMC.

Years 5-6 have 10 team no trade.

Years 7-8 have 20 team no trade.

Seriously.

I know the stakes are pretty low because it’s only 3.85 million per year but I think this the stupidest contract in the history of the NHL. Maybe not the worst because the dollar figure but definitely the stupidest.

If I were trying to defend the deal I guess I could argue that teams can benefit from having some continuity, leadership and (overused term) 'culture' in their bottom 6/3rd pair- if they think he brings those things fine

OTOH esp your 4th line (and I can't imagine he's not there by the end of this deal or not sooner) I think you want some turnover, competition for jobs, places for young guys to fight their way in (I know the Oilers don't have that right now- maybe never again) as opposed to holding a spot in perpetuity-

The likes of Trent Frederic getting an 8 year deal with a full NMC is hilarious in itself, but giving him this contract when you're in the middle of a tough cap crunch is incredible.

Enjoy Mulletville, Trent.

That...is patently absurd for a 3rd liner.
