Not a huge fan of an 84 game schedule, but, eliminating 2 preseason games makes this pretty much ado of nothing, so fine.
I'm a little mystified at the EBUG thing though. Its such a small, rare event that seemingly making it standard is kind of baffling?
I was somewhat under the impression that everyone loves the EBUG system as it is. The Zamboni guy or Arena Maintenance dude takes some shots against the pros from time to time and, very rarely, gets to step into a game and everyone rallies around them...I dont think theres ever been a negative EBUG story, they're almost universally awesome.
Why is this something that needed to be fixed?

Toronto got embarrassed by their own Zamboni driver. Which is why it had to change.

I was entertained!
I cheered hard for that Zamboni driver! He earned that 'W!'

It just gets taxed at your marginal tax rate as does their salary. There is no difference.

That's not what I gathered from this:
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/nhl...fee24a62&ei=61
Quote:
The case centered on the $15.25 million signing bonus he received in 2018, which the CRA argued should be taxed as regular income rather than a signing bonus. Tavares, a U.S. resident then, maintained that the bonus qualified for preferential tax treatment under Canadian law.
In a recent ruling, a judge sided with Tavares and dismissed the CRA’s case after the agency refused to disclose key documents to justify its tax reassessment. The decision marks a significant legal win not just for Tavares but potentially for all Canadian NHL franchises that use signing bonuses to attract top-tier talent.
Unless the ruling is appealed, it could reshape how such bonuses are treated in future tax audits — and offer Canadian teams a more straightforward path to competing financially with their American counterparts.

Granted, this stuff is over my head.

Lame. Although likely extremely dangerous for whatever random middle aged former amateur athlete that got chosen to play NHL hockey for the night, it was also hilarious. Especially when the Leafs lose to sed random middle aged former amateur athlete.

I wonder what the league had to give up in order for the players to agree to shorter contract lengths

I didn't read every post in this thread, but bringing down the max contract one year would make it less likely a guy with an expiring deal, like McDavid, would accept a short term deal. They won't be able to get a 7/8 year deal once the change kicks in.

Sure it has, they extended it to everyone, which goes to show you how much the teams thought it was a problem.
If it's being reported correctly (and we'll have to see what the final CBA says), it sounds like they're getting rid of the graduation exemption too, so teams will lose their rights to players 4 years after they're drafted, even if they haven't finished college yet... and graduating players won't have to wait until mid-August to become free agents.

Is the CBA guaranteeing that the cap is $104 and $113 mil the following 2 seasons? Is that a minimum, could it be more?

I think the universal application of the four year window for signing draft picks is maybe the biggest deal. Of course the NCAA option is going to remain very appealing since a college education and NIL money are big draws.

Remain? It’s more appealing than ever.
There’s virtually no reason any longer for guys not to go NCAA at 18 unless they expect to play in the NHL the same year they’re drafted.

CHL still the best league purely for developing young players because of the schedule and more physical play. That remains their selling point but obviously expect changes in the financial model.
Did you expect the NHL to do something to protect major junior hockey in their CBA? That’s not exactly their mission.
The so called loophole (it never actually was a loophole) is gone, doesn’t matter what you do after being drafted. Which is as it should be IMO.
