As much as we crap on Gulutzan for being a bad head coach, he seems to be a pretty decent-to-good assistant coach, so the Oilers losing him might be a good thing.

Would prefer if it wasn't Dallas taking him, though, as I agree that's probably a step backwards in their goal of getting past the Oilers.

Moving from DeBoer to Gulutzan is something else lol. Massive downgrade.

For a team that seems to do a lot of things right, hiring Gulutzan would be a complete 180. Sure there's enough talent that Gulutzan could get them into the playoffs but he's a massive downgrade on DeBoer, Montgomery, and even Bowness.

I'm not sold on DeBoer as a great coach. He has lost with bad teams, won with good ones, but usually after replacing a good coach (Lemaire, Gallant especially) and each good team he takes over does well and then just starts to slip. He took Vegas from a former SC finalist under Gallant to out of the POs in two years. Then when he was replaced, Vegas won the cup the next year. Maybe Dallas is trying to avoid that.

The GG option isn't great though. There are some successful coaches out there - Gallant and Laviolette. I wonder if Sutter would go to Dallas.

I think they might go in-house on this one. Get some new faces behind the bench rather than the Old Boy Carousel.

Is The Beav™ considered an Old Boy yet?

That's literally every team in the NHL. All teams start to slip at some point.

Vegas went from finalist under Gallant to out of the POs under DeBoer, to Cup winners under Cassidy. That wasn't Vegas slipping.

We don’t really know all the details. Maybe they want him as a PP coach, not HC.

(Which is also pretty hilarious. How can anyone think he’s the reason for the EDM PP lol.)

Edit: Wait a minute. Maybe this is Dallas signalling to McD that they want to sign him. Get his PP coach first than use that to lure him in!

Gully, is a really good guy and very charismatic and positive. After you meet him you kinda get why he gets hired, if that makes sense. Not arrogant even though he has that look. Even his kid was awesome and hilarious.

Yup. Being able to build relationships with people, make lasting good impressions and have people truly like you and want to have you in their network is a talent that will get you far in your profession.

I don't see it that way. I was a fan of Gully while he was here and think he got a raw deal. He is a very smart tactical coach.

I guess I will scratch Dallas off as being a serious contender.

I like Dallas' makeup overall, but I thought of them as 'almost a contender' (though by my own definition, reaching the conference finals automatically pushes you into that class). I always felt like there was just something 'missing' from that team to call them true contenders. Now I really feel there is something missing - decent coaching.

Maybe Gulutzan has improved. I don't know. I guess we will see. I would bet against it at the moment, but I guess we will see what happens with them. It really does seem like a step in the wrong direction for them.

GG is a great, fantastic assistant coach. Some people can't get past that. That's fine. He's in ultra-elite company. That's a hell of a level to "top-out" at.

Flames were a .500 regulation team under him over two seasons A lot of players played worse under him especially some of the defenseman as Treliving bolstered the defense with the additions of Dougie Hamilton, Michael Stone, Travis Hamonic and the team actually somehow became worse defensively because of bad pairings, odd deployment, etc. There's a lot of evidence out there that suggests he's just in over his head as a head coach while being a serviceable to decent assistant coach.

Interesting. Seravalli is reporting a different ex Oilers staff member, Jay Woodcroft joining as an assistant there.
