If the Sharks drafted Mrtka or Hensler this year, it would probably be 5-7 years before he is ready to take over the top spot from Andersson.
In short, the Sharks do not need one or the other, they need both. I am not sure how many teams are willing to part with a top pair D and D prospects.

Sergachev will be 33 when his contract ends. Utah gets all of his prime years.
Andersson would be 38.
That's a world of difference.

If I'm looking at Detroit as a potential trade partner, are you looking at ...
Danielson/Brandsegg-Nygard + Wallinder/Albert Johansson + similar picks?

The Sharks needs 2-3 top 4 D that can contribute now. They are not going anywhere with a top 4 of Ferroro, Liljegren, Thrun, and Desharnais and they are now wasting time on Celebrini and company.
They are not going to care about how old a player is at the end of their contract, all that matters is that they get out of their rebuild now.
Also, what young D do you see as being available and ready to step into a top 4 role? Byram? Anyone else? It's cool to talk about the hypothetical "other" but without a real alternative, Ekblad and Andersson remain the best available #1RD. And Ekblad is even older than Andersson so there is a whole world of difference to consider in how old and broken down he is.

Love Andersson and would be happy if he stayed. But I'll be even more happy if he's traded for a haul. Glad to see that Conroy isn't fooled by the recent 9th place finish and is looking further ahead.

It's more not letting assets go to waste. If Andersson wants more than they're willing to give him they have to move him.

So will trading Andersson not count as asset management and building through youth because they offered him a contract and he didn't sign it?

Nope. Just the fact they offered him a contract means the Flames don’t care about asset management…
I do wonder what they offered Andersson though. My guess is it is term moreso than money.

Steinberg was seeing at 8 x $9M vs 6 x $7M

II think it was more both sides sat down and got real with where they thought they were at. Not sure a formal contract was ever placed in front of him with actual numbers and a pen for signature.
Feeling is both sides knew going into the final discussion that it was time to move on.

8x$9M for Andersson is an informal trade request not unlike the Lindholm situation.

IMO they offered him a contract out of respect. It was a gesture. "We like you, we respect what you've done for us, so we won't just discard you. But this is all we can do."
Have you never sent an invitation you knew wouldn't be accepted just so you wouldn't be accused of snubbing or ignoring the invitee?

It also would be downright stupid to not do your due diligence and not have conversations with Andersson about a contract. Maybe you sit down and you find out he's willing to sign a sweetheart deal to stay and now you don't have to go looking for the next Rasmus Andersson to place into your lineup.
I agree with what Royle said that I don't think the Flames were ever 'pushing' a contract on Andersson once they knew he was pricing himself out of the range they were comfortable with. You still should explore all available options before fully deciding to cut bait.

Yup, similar to the other UFAs the Flames were ‘forced’ to move after a contract offer. I’m sure this will get brought up as another example of the player ‘saving’ the team from themselves in a few months lol

Goes both ways.
Flames couldn't have thought he'd go for 6 x $7 either.
Seems it's a mutual parting of ways, as has been reported.
