Final Wheeler draft has flames taking:
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/644...t-2025-wheeler
18) Carbonneau
Quote:
The Flames' pool is deepest on defense and deeper on the wing than it is at center. They should consider Reschny here if he's around, and I think they're a team that would. But I don't think Matvei Gridin or Aydar Suniev preclude them from taking a winger here, and I think there are good odds that one of the second-tier wingers lingers. Some wonder about Carbonneau's defensive play, his average skating, his late-stage agency switch and consider him a little cocky — and while those are all viewed as very minor things, and he could go higher than here as a 6-1 winger with a legitimate skill-scoring-size-physicality package, is it just enough to make him the one that slips a little? (It's worth noting I'm a big fan of Carbonneau, he'd be my best player available here, I'm not the only one, and I think the Flames pool could really use a player like him.)
If the Flames go winger, they could also always go center with their next pick, and there are a couple of talented options who could make it.
|
31) Kindel
Quote:
If the Flames take a winger at No. 18, I could see them target a center at No. 32. Kindel, who has been playing for the WHL team they own, makes a lot of sense, not just for those reasons but also to add some offensive smarts/skill to their pool. It's not often you can find a 99-point WHLer this late.
|
54) Stockselius
Quote:
Stockselius needs to get quicker, but he's a pro-sized forward who’s effective all over the ice and can play different roles. He could be a potential future third-liner for a team like the Flames, and he's going to go in this late-second/early-third range.

Rangers are sending the 12th OA pick to the Penguins.
The pick was conditionally sent to Vancouver in the JT Miller trade and Vancouver flipped it to Pens in the Marcus Pettersson trade.
NYR had up until today to decide to send the 12th OA pick or their unprotected 2026 1st to the Penguins.

Okay, that REALLY is telling on how much everyone thinks of the draft.
There’s no way it’s 2012 levels bad, right??? Or is it more how deep 2026 is? Or do the Rangers try to compete again and want to use a 2026 pick as trade bait?

Don't the Sens also have to decide if they are keeping their pick this year? Or am I making that up?

They have 24 hours after the draft lottery to make their decision. Looks like they are locked in to forefeit 2026

Meaning they are going to give up the 2026 pick?

yes. They had to give up 2024, 2025, or 2026 and make their decision 24 hours after the draft lottery in those years whether they kept that year's pick or forfeited.
Since they kept the 2025 pick, they have to forfeit the 2026 pick.

I think most middling teams likely dont want to give up a lottery pick with Gavin McKenna on the line.

It's an interesting decision by the Rangers for sure. On one hand - yeah, don't give up a potential McKenna lottery ticket. On the other hand - it kind of signals that they don't fully believe in their team to be better next year, no?

With the reported quality of this year's draft class, and even the smallest possibility of getting a player like McKenna next year, I would say that most teams (even if they believe they'll be better next season) would prefer hedge their bets and give up this year's pick.

I know the outward narrative is they have confidence in their club so they expect their picks to get higher (worse) with each passing year, but also wonder (maybe this has been settled elsewhere and I missed it) that they just keep hoping in pushing the can down the road that they will get a full or partial reprieve?

Injuries happen you never know. Look at the Spurs in the NBA they had injuries and got Tim Duncan and 5 rings.

OILFAN is the one with Sharks connections right? Any updates on that Misa vs Martone post from a while back? Lots of chatter about Frondell now too but I can't see them taking him over Misa
