I have a friend who's hobby it is to ride and restore old scooters, vespas, etc. He takes them or rents them when travelling all over the world and North America. It is pretty cool to see the work that he does with them. Not my cup of tea cause I would kill myself on one but if you like to do it, then have at 'er. Make sure you get a cool melon protector though.

Then my one buddy was like dude, that is the lamest #### of all time and now I'm having a dilemma. He's like get a motorcycle - it's way cooler. I concede motorcycles are cool, but I'm not looking to pick up chicks by any stretch, but I wouldn't mind the odd chick showing a hint of attention. Plus, I'm not interested in killing myself on a motorcycle when I invariably want to see how fast it can go.

So, question. Are Vespas cool or lame?

Spoiler!
I actually wanted to buy one this year! Alas, my wife is right that they are no more safer than a motorcycle.

I wanted a vespa for these reasons:

- I live just too far away from work (and downhill) to walk to work, so ultimately drive.

- We, by choice, are a one-car household so its sometimes a pain.

- They are just barely more expensive than an electric bike.

- Electric bikes are a pain to ride in work clothes.

- I dont need a motorbike.

- Motorbikes are a pain to ride in work clothes.

- Motorbikes are more expensive.

- I am a grown ass man and couldn't care less what some CHUDs think about the vehicle i drive.

As mentioned, the con is essentially that i could get seriously hurt, and my wife won't let me get one. So I'll probably buy an electric bike.

You say that now, but the guy wipes out on a Vespa and ends up with scrapes over his head and holes in his hands and then you got some 'splainin to do!

Vespas are only cool in a scenic coastal vacation-type setting like the French Riviera or the Tuscany vineyards...

Yeah, I think an eBike probably makes more sense than a vespa, but Vespas are a lot sexier looking.

Basically I think they're cool

To answer the OP in the spirit of the question; NO, they are not cool.
You will look goofy and give females the ick.

Of course the do whatever you want and who cares what people think advice is true, but that's a given and not really the nature of the question.

Vespas are undeniably cool but as has been touched on by others, locale and the looks/style of the rider play a big part.

Show your wife some pictures of riders getting hurt on electric bikes, she will see your reasoning.

When I think of Vespas, I can't help but think of the first HBO 24/7 with the Penguins and Capitals. There's a scene where Mike Green is riding around on a bright orange Vespa, and later in the episode, Mike Rupp chirps Green's scooter by comparing it to the pink one his daughter is rolling around on in front of his house.

I like Vespas. They are pretty fun to ride, in that they can be relaxing and don't have the heavy noises/pull of a larger bike. Riding around Calgary though.....

Useless in the winter (obviously). Not the ideal vehicle for a busy highway. I would not hit Deerfoot on one of these, for example. If you live in a place where you have a route that doesn't require you to traverse one of the main arteries, you're probably okay. Although in Calgary, that's a pretty limited area. You're probably fine on a road like Crowchild or maybe McLeod, but wouldn't use it regularly on anything heavier.

Well it sounds like he just wants to tool around his neighbourhood. Use it locally. I think thats perfect.

I would endorse an obnoxious helmet though.
