Basically, the bonuses don't count against the cap during the season, but if they get paid out and put the Jets over the cap at the end of the season, the over-the-cap amount will carry over against their cap the following season.

Here's an explanation of the bonus overages from this season: https://puckpedia.com/news/25overage

He must’ve had a line of teams for him to be getting that kind of coin. That said, I don’t have high odds at all that he’ll be any good after two seasons off. Just seems like a stretch. Cheveldeff is among the better GMs out there but to put that much hope with that much risk…uff. That team really needs fast skill up front.

I like how they think they're still getting an effective player.

Maybe they know something we don't.

Did he look really good on rollerblades against the local neighborhood team?

I don't understand what risk people keep talking about. It's a one year contract.

Lebrun said it basically came down to Winnipeg or Colorado.

Jets are at a win now mode. While you’re right it’s only one year, they’re giving up the opportunity cost of getting someone else who can make a greater impact for that price. At his age it’s unlikely he’ll bounce back. If he’s mediocre and plays fourth line quality he’ll get upwards of $7M. It’s a weak free agency year but still. Winnipeg doesn’t have many years to waste.

If he's that terrible they just don't have to play him every night and save some of the bonuses.

Question, how are bonuses calculated in relation to the cap?

It all goes into the next year I thought. They won’t care about paying him 7 million cause then they would have won the cup.

So full explanation on how performance bonuses count against the cap:

Every team has a 7.5% bonus cushion in which they can exceed the salary cap with performance bonuses.

At the end of the season, any performance bonuses earned is applied to the team's end of season cap space. An overage is applied to next season cap hit.

So for example if Toews earns $2.5 mil in performance bonuses and the Jets finish the 25/26 season with $1 mil in cap space, the Jets will be charged $1.5 mil towards the 26/27 season for the overage.

But if he's not terrible but rather just 3rd/4th line quality, then they lose money and cap space by playing him instead of finding a cheaper guy for those spots, because of that contract structure.

This has a lot of potential to be really bad.

I can’t see how this ends up very badly for the Jets. They are on a lot of no trades and unless they go deep in the playoffs the cap impact will be fairly minimal
