Was that Gulatzan who forced Brodie to play LD, even though he is more comfortable and effective as a RD? His play went downhill from there...

Gonna put this here as there’s too much wild stuff going on in the other threads.
Brodie was listed as a buyout candidate. Here’s others who are mentioned. Wonder if we can take on picks for taking one of these deals on.
Dumba
Mathieu Joseph
Kotkaniemi
Engvall
Holl
Vlasic
Grubauer
Sheary
Jarry (surprising but he made list)
Mayfield
Bertuzzi
Samuelson (buf)
Kampf
First blush is that maybe a D or G as backup for Wolf, depending on what the add on would be to take on a deal.
Kotkaniemi is interesting but has long term on his deal. Hasn’t fit in Carolina. Might be a buy low candidate.

Heck of a career for a 4th round pick.

Would be surprised to see Vlasic bought out. The Sharks have a ton of space and he's in the last year of his deal.
In fact, the Sharks don't have a single blueliner with any NHL experience under contract after next season other than Luca Cagnoni, who has played 6 games.

Flames could trade future considerations for Brodie and a 2nd to fill in for a traded Andersson during a planned tank.

Why would Chicago trade a 2nd to get rid of him when they can simply buy him out?

Hell no. He is done. Even when he was at the top of his game here he was a turnover machine. No.

People are romanticizing Brodie a bit in this thread. He definitely has his inconsistent moments in Calgary and performed best even paired with Giordano.
Put into a place, like Chicago, where the defence is a gong show, is not a situation Brodie is likely to thrive in.
Even after losing a step, I could see Brodie being effective in a complimentary role in a good team, but not leading a bad team.

A shame the wheels fell off so rapidly, he was still an excellent player 4 years ago.

Brodie was not leading a bad team. He was getting 5-6 minute when he played. He was back end on a bad team.

Brodie was already bad on the back half of his contract in Toronto. He's lost more than a step.

Maybe he's headed to Europe, hence the unconditional waivers and buyout.

I agree that he lost more than a step, and he just can't use his skating to get himself out of his mistakes anymore. That said, I thought he was pretty good in the 22-23 season. He performed at least like a #2/3D. Then he looked like a bottom pairing D in his last season with the Leafs, and as a replacement level D with the Hawks.

I hope so. I liked Brodie, but yeah, sometimes its time to call it when you're down on your game, but if you can extend your career playing the game you love in Europe? Why not do it?
I would. The money is lower, sure, but you can play a slower, more methodical, less physical game for longer and you get to play fewer games and travel across some of the nicest parts of Europe? Sounds awesome.

I always loved Brodie here. I think he played well on either side, just not with Hamonic! That's when he looked bad. I thought his skating was near elite, really good IQ, and he was really strong at playmaking for a defencemen. That backhand pass from the right side of the blue-line right onto the stick of a forward busting hard on the left side of the offensive blue-line was magic. Really loved Brodie here.
With that said, there isn't room in Calgary. Too many young kids need waivers this year - Solovyov I think improved and might make it, Kuznetsov is a first-time waiver eligible, as is Poirier (who might be the next Brodie!). Parekh is expected to make the squad, and Brzustewicz is pushing. Would have been fine with Brodie as a 7th otherwise, but the kids need to play.
It wouldn't surprise me if he signs another deal somewhere after this. While I do think that Brodie is close to the end here, I don't think he is quite cooked yet. In the right system with the right partner, I think he can be a reliable defencemen on the bottom pairing. I guess we will see.
