Massive trade. Funny how the writing on the wall for Devers was after he complained about not being able to play 3B. Well. Now he goes to San Fran who have platinum glover chapman playing 3rd. So I guess he's not going to get his wish even after a trade.
Sox have now trade Devers , Betts and Sale for effectively cost reasons
I mean, I think they traded Devers because they couldn't get along with him (they replaced him at third, made him DH, and then got mad when he wouldn't play first). I don't think it was primarily a cost issue, although this does reduce their payroll.
That's more than I thought they'd get to be honest. Young cost controlled potential starter, high leverage bullpen arm (I really like Hicks), and the Giants first rounder from the most recent draft.

After asking Devers to DH which he really didn't want to do, the Red Sox asked him to consider a move to first when Casas got injured and Devers pretty much refused. So the Red Sox essentially feel like he's not being a team player and are willing to get rid of the contract. Devers had a horrific start to the season..essentially getting a few foul tips in his first like 20 at bats with like 15 strikeouts. But since that he's hit really well
I do think the Red Sox could have handled it differently by asking Devers to prepare to play some first in the spring. He might have still balked at the idea.
In San Fran, I'd guess he'll be DH. Chapman is having a good season at the plate and was a plus level defender. I don't imagine they'll trade him right away. But maybe they look to trade Chapman in the offseason since his contract is a bit risky. I guess Chapman is out right now, and maybe the injury is a bit more serious than first thought.

I think, long-term, this is a good trade for Boston. Devers isn't a body type that's going to age well and eventually you're not getting out of the deal, let alone getting two potentially solid players for him. The "not a team player" thing is pretty specious given the FO made him the franchise player then immediately signed a different star at his position but ... if he's a dick you probably don't want him around the new core that's on its way up.
That said, the timing is hilarious and the return mid-season doesn't come close to justifying said timing. Like knowing your marriage isn't good but choosing to ask for a divorce on the flight to your two week vacation or something.

Heh. Turned on the O's Rays game at 8-0 O's, and if course they had live odds, with Rays paying +2000. Kind of wish I'd put a buck or two on that comeback
