There’s a reason Minny wants to trade their 2nd-leading scorer, and a reason why he was a 4th-liner in the playoffs. Stay away, unless you can get him at a very low price.

I wonder who that roster player was because that doesn't seem like bad value to Minnesota (unless that roster player was a dud).
Rossi is undersized, undeniably, at 5'9" and 182 lbs. He has managed to do this:
24/25: 24G, 36A, 60PTS, 82 GP
23/24: 21G, 19A, 40PTS, 82 GP
22/23: 0G, 1A, 1PTS, 19 GP
Michael Russo has said Guerin is wanting a player who can replace Rossi's 55-60 points, so I'd guess Vancouver wasn't bringing that to the table. Looking at Vancouver, I feel like the only two players that somewhat fit that are Garland and Hoglander, and maybe Chytil?
Calgary also doesn't have a stand out player that fits the bill. Sharangovich's down year probably makes him a no, Farabee and Frost are both coming off down years...would Minnesota do Zary? Would the Flames do Zary - I'm not sure they would.
Minnesota is likely looking to fill two roster spots up front this Summer (with the subtraction of Rossi). I wonder if the Flames couldn't get Minnesota to bite on a quantity for quality? Frost + Farabee + 32nd? Add in the 54th? Hard to see an exact fit with Calgary.
I feel like Minnesota and Buffalo could be pretty good trade partners...
|
Gurein is a tool. Why would a team give up the exact same production AND their 1st rounder? If you're giving up an equal player, it should be one-for-one with maybe some minor adds to account for contract and maybe age differences.
Unless Minnesota is taking back a bad contract as well. If they want a 55-60 point player back, maybe we can interest them in a slightly used Huberdeau.

Dang, not a Rossi fan? I've watched highlights, and I know Bader's model really liked him. If possible, I think it'd be cool to do a quantity for quality move...but that's not having a lot of exposure to the player other than online video.
Frost also wouldn't be a guy I'm in a hurry to ship out...but I was thinking Rossi's upside is there.

Like I’ve said before, I have no idea why so many fall in love with small players. Is it the underdog thing? I dunno. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very good small players, but lack of size will always be listed in the “weaknesses” column.

That's the thing. I like Rossi and think he could be an important player for the Flames, but given that he is disgruntled and the Wild obviously don't see the upside in him if they're demoting him in the playoffs, why would anyone pay a premium?
Guerin: "Hey, here's a player we don't think is as great as his production suggests, but we still want the same value back as if we didn't think that."
I don't blame him for trying I guess, but I hope no GM bites. Players like that get traded at discounts. Lord knows the Flames have had to do that in the past.
I also get the height issue, particularly for a center, is a real thing, but I do like that Rossi isn't light and has some strength.

The Flames need to be careful both ways. I do believe you need bigger players to win especially on the backend. You don’t want to get players just because they are big and you don’t want to shy away from players because they are small. We have done a great job accumulating skill players but you need size speed and grit to win playoff rounds.
Easier said than done. Tampa Colorado Florida Vegas and blues all had big teams that could also skate with tons of Skill. Everyone wants those players that’s why it’s hard to accomplish.
Maurice when talking about Mikkola and Jones pairing. They can hold hands and covers the walls.

Definitely a fair take. Probably overrating Rossi on my side.

Tires franchise is starved for the #1 guy and not just you but whenever a name pops up everyone gets excited.
Rossi just isn’t the guy not even as a #2. Much rather have frost or Kadri.
I think any trade efforts should be to get into the top 5 that’s how we will get our guy.

I think Rossi could be a good 2C. But he has to be surrounded by bigger guys.

Personally I am not convinced Rossi brings more to the table than Frost so hell no.

I have my reservations on Rossi. I get he’s small, but that’s only in height. He’s a much more skilled Paul Byron, he plays bigger than his size.
I trust Conroy and the pro/amateur scouts’ decision. If Rossi makes more sense for this team’s direction, then let’s grab him. Otherwise, let’s continue the course with grabbing more prospects.

Sellers market for C. Too many teams wanting C, not enough selling C. So he will push as much as he can, and he’s smart to do so given the market.
Hope Conny is looking at some lower priced options. I wonder about Sillinger, as he’s behind Mony and Fantilli. Is Alex Turcotte an option at C or is he more W? Is Mercer more affordable price wise after a pretty mid season. Pinto in Ottawa? hayton is probably off the market in Utah after a decent season. And keep coming back to Kotkaniemi. Could he benefit from a change of scenery? And maybe we can pry a C prospect in an Andersson trade.

I just think it's funny that that they don't seem to like him that much nor do they want to pay him the going rate for a center with his production, yet they want trade value that surpasses all that. Fair points that you made though about it being a seller's market for centers, which it almost always is. For all his weaknesses, Rossi is probably as good as you can expect to get for a center on the trade market most of the time.
I also wonder if Sillinger could be worth a shot. It feels like he has been around for a long time, but he is only 22 years old. And like you said, he seems to be falling down their depth chart. I don't know what his ceiling is, but for the right price I would do it. I also wonder if Mercer could be had. Obviously none of these guys are #1 centers, but you don't find those on the trade market.
As a side note, why is it when I do a Bing search for "Marco Rossi" does it ask me if I want to use "SafeSearch"? Are their raunchy pictures of him online or something? I don't get that with other player searches.

Taking a quick look, Samuelsson is 25 and signed for 5 more seasons at $4.285M per year. Last season he played over 332 mins with Dahlin as RD with 50% xGF, and 317 mins with Power as LD, with a 40% xGF. So he can play both sides and he averaged over 19 mins a night. He finished as a +3 on a Sabres team that had a -22 goal differential. Flames have the cap space and he might be a really good bottom 4 defenseman. If not his contract is an easy buyout in a year or two that carries a $714k ongoing penalty.

Conroy and Iginla are pretty new to their roles and I have optimism from them. Maybe I'm biased because of who they are.
I'm not sure mentioning Nonis and Maloney are the success examples I would bring up though. If anything, I am hoping Conroy is ignoring their advise.
But whatever, the trades aren't happening. I am hoping for a good return for Andersson.
