I don't really read it as that.

This gives them a really cheap middle 6 option, protects them from the offer sheet and they get to deal with it when they have a bit more flexibility.

Feels like a great move by them to keep him even with the cap issues.

Bourque just did Nill and the veterans on that roster a big favor.

Let's see if they remember that.

I'm a little surprised, because I thought there would be at least a couple of teams considering an offer sheet. That said, I could see the Stars promising him a much bigger role this year with their depth taking a big hit with Marchment, and potentially Benn, Dadonov and Granlund out the door.

EDIT: I see they signed Lundkvist as well.

Now they have $2.75M of capspace with 9F, 7D, 2G signed.

So it’s a 3 year deal with the other 2 being announced next year when they have more cap room …..

Dallas will trade him to another tax-free state.

The more I think about it, it wouldn't be very Maverick-ey to spell your name Maverick like everyone else or with correct spelling.

With Bourque only signing a 1 year deal they can start talking about the next contract in a couple of weeks.

Thing is, the Stars' cap situation doesn't get any better next offseason. Harley is going to want to get paid and Seguin is still on the books. I don't see how Bourque (or his agent) benefits from this. He could have more than doubled his salary with in offer-sheet.

It's not like Bourque is really unproven. He played ~12 minutes per game and put up 11 goals and 14 assists. He might not be blowing the doors off of the place like Johnston or Robertson but I think it is safe to assume he could become a 20+ goal guy if given ~16 or more minutes per game.

Does the Stars a big favor, but he definitely could’ve received a 1/2 year deal in the 3rd round compensation category. Big miss by him and his agent imo.

I really think it's just a show-me deal and a player betting on himself. I doubt there is a handshake agreement already in place.

At the very least, he is a good 4th line player. Maybe there is more there, we'll have to wait and see. I don't think it's as simple as just giving him more minutes and the points will go up at the same rate. Being the go-to best scoring option on the 4th line is different than playing up the line-up. If he can maintain a 13.8 shooting percentage while playing on the 2nd or 3rd line, he'll be a star. For context, that was a little bit better than Rantanen.

Yup. Left a couple million guaranteed via an offer sheet on the table for a team that health bombed him in the playoffs after being a full time contributor during the regular season. Odd decision that really only benefits the team.

He obviously wants to play for Dallas and sees a better opportunity this year getting more minutes.

It could pay off big time for him down the road. There are lots of offensive players on Dallas he can play with, and likely a good opportunity.

And down the road can be very soon.
