Parkland Summerfest is this weekend. The Trews, Lee Aaron and Prism are playing.

Always a good time with old bands.

Are you going? I've gone every year for the last 4/5 and it's generally awesome. I love seeing these bands and thinking "I have no idea what they sing" and then realising that I know almost all the songs. The weather could be better, from the look of things though.

Yup. I will be there. Sponsoring a tent, so have some shelter at least.

Such an awesome neighborhood- That park is awesome, and obviously the community association works hard to bring awesome events for the residents

I usually go, but this year I have a Sled Island show I'm going to instead. I've done Summerfest in the rain, though, and it's still super fun. Parkland is cool as hell.

Folk Festival starts tomorrow. Cake closes out the show on the main stage Sunday night while Sierra Ferrel hits the stage Thursday evening. Cake hasn't released an album in 14 year and they were last in Calgary in..2009?

We got tickets just for Thursday and Sunday this year, to see Michael Kiwanuka (Thur) and Cake (Sun). Choked that Kiwanuka has cancelled. But Cake should be great. I saw them at the Blues and Roots festival in 2004 and it was fantastic. Friends who have seen them recently say they still put on a great show.

Gotta think the War Pigs cover is a given now, which is great.

Folk Fest has made some really bizarre booking choices in the last handful of years. I’m sure COVID did irreparable damage, especially considering how it changed the touring landscape in general, but outside a bright spot here and there Folk Fest seems to be circling the drain.

I went for a day last year and won’t be going this year. Hopefully next year there’s some sign of a return to form.

Kiwanuka was great back at the 2017 festival

The are a lot more music festivals on the circuit than there used to be, with more money chasing artists, so the headline talent available to mid-sized festivals like Calgary is spread thin. The CFF organizers do their best, but it’s just a way more competitive environment than it was even 10 or 15 years ago.

Gotta feel that Stampede with the Coke Stage, Nashville North and the Cowboys music festival all happening during Stampede two weeks prior they've really taken over. Live music has always been a part of the ten days but post covid I feel like it's getting huge.

It’s incredible, the Stampede has gone the exact opposite way and quickly become one of the best “music festivals” Calgary has ever had and part of that is expanding beyond the country thing. Country is still well represented, but whether you’re into that, pop, electronic, rock, hip hop, it doesn’t matter. There’s nostalgic 80s/90s bands and bands nobody over the age of 25 has heard of.

They’ve definitely siphoned some of what could potentially end up at Folk Fest, but I also know there is some intent from the organizers behind lineups that cater to an older audience as opposed to acts that that appeal to a younger audience and tread that indie/folk/pop line. I know of a few incidents where there was some pushback over the kinds of crowds popular acts brought from the tarpee people.

I think they can evolve a bit while maintaining a strong connection to their roots, but I don’t think there is much appetite from the current people running it.

See Los Lobos if you can. Sorry I can’t see them this time. My second favorite band.

Agreed that Los Lobos is great live.
I'm going to see Jolie Laide tomorrow night who is also excellent. The members have been playing in other bands over 20 years but only a couple years together.
