Could they be waiting for that Hart guy?

Pisani was actually one of their few good forwards when he got that contract. Didn't age well though.

Genuinely baffled. Shades of the Mikko Koskinen deal signed mid-January
Well, I think McDavid is going to sign, but here’s a theory I considered:

The Oilers actually believe they’re going to lose McDavid (or that there is a very strong possibility they might). So this is either an attempt to secure players McDavid likes (for whatever reason) through much of what his next contract might be (so he can see what he’s signing up for) OR (more fun) they’re trying to lock players in BEFORE McDavid leaves, knowing how much more difficult it will be to attract any talent at all without him.

This seems like the type of player you should be replacing internally with draft picks, rather than signing to a long term deal

This is what I was thinking is their plan. They sign Carter Hart and just run it back with pretty much the same team.

This organization is such a bumbling embarrassment.

Winning that McDavid lottery was the only thing that kept them from being the worst run sports franchise for the last 20 years and actually brought them any sort of relevance.

Thank christ (and the Panthers) they never won a cup with him.

When he's gone they can go back to being a pathetic after thought again.

Seeing the term this cross my mind as well. They could be preparing for McDavid to leave and signing guys to term. It was mentioned they are working on a bunch of guys. So they will be cash strapped again trying to take another shot but will have a team a ####ty one but a team if McDavid leaves.

Oilers will sign Bouch to an 8 x $1.1M contract. All this talk of $11M, he won’t even notice he’s being fleeced.

I’m agreeing with you that he didn’t deserve a long-term deal, but he’s a different player than Jeannot, because he actually has talent. Jeannot didn’t have a single season before or after his breakthrough that would paint him as having any offensive skill- that season was a true outlier. Frederic was drafted in the first-round (though that was not warranted), and he can actually skate. Can’t defend his season this year, but I think he’ll bounce back.

Maybe they are including the rarely used clause, the opposite NMC, aka guaranteed escape clause.

Maybe one day McDavid will realize surrounding himself with comfort isn't working. I mean all his old friends, teammates, coaches, agents have him right here 10 years in.

I remember hearing that Chiarelli was living when the Flames traded for Hamilton too, as they thought that they had that deal locked up and then the Flames snuck in and the Bruins took the better pick.

Then Chiarelli turned around and traded the same package to the NYI for Griffin Reinhart lol.

McDavid cares a lot about winning. As long as he doesn't have to take less money, or evolve his game, or ditch all the hangers on he brought into the organization, or stop taking ice time for garbage time points.

This was my first thought when I heard the rumour - has to be a (very foolish) attempt to appease McMiserable
