I don’t think “bullet time” aged as well as it could have. It was cool at the time though. Plus one scene in the later movies with the thousands of Agent Smiths looked really off.
Why watch the later movies, they're not good.
As for the effects in the first one, the main reason I feel it holds up so well is that the effects are used with so much thought. Or I guess you could just call it good writing and directing. What really makes a great special effect is not just the quality of the effect, but how well it works with the moment in the story. Bullet time looks very CGI (like it always did), but it's such a great beat in the story that it doesn't matter when you're watching the movie. It's good enough for what it needs to be at that moment.
When you strip the scene out of the movie and remove the story context, then the technical deficiency starts to be noticeable.
Just amazing. And similarly to Lucas, Jackson at the time didn't really have the cred for a project of this magnitude but by sheer force of will he made it happen.
And he never made another Tolkien-related trilogy again.
In case anyone is curious, the new Jurassic World is (likely) the next Mystery Movie Landmark will be showing next week. Those mystery movies are a really good investment. Cheaper than when they actually hit theaters, and I've found the quality is usually good.Something worth checking out for movie aficionados... Although Jurassic World might buck that trend, but at least it's cheap!

I always look at that listing and get tempted but never have gone, great tip!

I read a neat theory a while back that essentially says that Agent Smith lowered the detail levels of his duplicates to allow for more to spawn without lagging the Matrix.

That reminds me of a Lord of the Rings fan theory that I heard recently.
The idea is that Frodo does not know Legolas' name. I guess he addresses every other character by name in scenes but never once says Legolas' name. Funny theory, not sure when I'll get around to checking the validity.

They usually don't show big budget movies, so this is a real change of pace. The biggest movie they had previously was Gladiator II. Matter of fact the last mystery movie was Life of Chuck, which I also quite enjoyed. If you check Reddit, or the runtime usually you'll find out the movie. If it's a horror, thriller, or action movie they'll usually mention that as well.
For $5-$7 you really can't go wrong. Although some people bring their kids to these movies, which is odd as they're often horror movies. I also remember many people walked out of September 5th because of the conflict in the Middle East.

I thought the Agent Smiths were all done with masks made from a cast of Hugo Weavings head. They should have looked better than the resulting video.
One day...he's going to make The Silmarillion a (probably several) films...now that would be a feat of magic. That is a dense Tome.
They're making a new trilogy during the time span between the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings called "The Hunt for Golem." There's a decent amount of meat on the bone when it comes to available writings to work off of. And we may even see the Blue Wizards factor in.

You always have to be aware that the Tolkien Estate is notoriously stingy with concerns to their rights. You never know what they may or may not be allowed to do.

They would be, please make 16 movies and give us 2% of gross.

It's nice they finally decided to make a prequel for LoTR.
Final Destination Bloodlines is a pretty fun reboot/sequel. It's definitely the funniest one of the series so far, and the death sequences are just as elaborate, ridiculous, and gory as previous instalments. Also features the late great Tony Todd in his final film appearance.
