I saw the video clip of this and perhaps the more troubling thing is how pretty much all of the men and women in the military behind him on that stage were applauding and cheering the announcement of the name changes.

They're likely vetted ahead of time to be confirmed Trump/Republican supporters. Military members with opposite political positions likely aren't invited to that specific area.

I don’t know if it’s true, but one of the YTers showed a list of questions they were supposedly asked before being added to the group behind him. All loyalty questions, of course, including not making faces. Wouldn’t surprise me.

To be fair, about 100,000 white southerners fought for the Union. If they really want to name some bases after a civil war southern whitey, surely there must be some out of that 100,000 that were noteworthy enough to deserve it.

I think you've touched on a really salient point: a lot of Americans, both immediately following the Civil War and up to the present, never accepted that the South lost and all the things that came with it (end of slavery, more federal vs. state power, etc.). That's ultimately what the Confederate flags have represented for the last 150 years. I think a lot of these people will not be satisfied until the south rises again, whatever that means. Even worse, there's an even bigger contingent of Americans that don't know and/or don't care.
