Oilers must be crushed. No exceptions.

It's not an international tournament, the Canada's team angle does not apply. Oilers represent Edmonton. Not Alberta, and not Canada. Their logo is their own, and that is all.

I would not expect an Oilers fan to root for Calgary, just as any self respecting Oilers fan would not expect us to root for them.

Also, they are the team of giving sexual assault perpetrators second chances. That's a hard no go for me

No to oilers. Always.

To the original poster, couldn’t you just use the third option and abstain?

Thanks, it was brutal and really has forever changed me, probably also contributed to my apathy on the subject at hand.

I completely understand. Our experience wasn't immediately traumatic but time to reflect on the situation made us realize how close we were to losing our son.

I'm going to take this to dm

The Oilers might not be Calgary's team or Alberta's team but they are definitely Canada's team. Many of us love our teams (mine are the Flames) but the Flames are not in the playoffs therefore we cheer for another Canadian team. Who are you to decide who is or isn't a true fan. To my mind you are the troll, making ridiculous statements just to get a rise out of the rest of us. So have at it, make some more of your childish comments. Go Oilers Go!

Cheering for the Oilers in already unacceptable, but saying "go Oilers go!" should be an immediate ban.

It's Go Flames Go and Let's Go Oilers. I would never say the latter out loud but at least get it right.

Anybody else cringe and revolt at the LGO chant every single time?

It's awful. Nails on a chalkboard. It doesn't even sound uplifting. It sounds like a choir of crows squawking in unison as they gather around a carcass.

To me, cheering for Edmonton is about cheering for the Oilers at this point. Its actively and openly allowing people like Bowman to continue to turn a blind eye to disgusting actions (or inaction in his case). Thats the major moral issue I have with people supporting that team. Add in players like Kane and Perry who have done enough wrong to be deemed worthy of contract termination.

If Dube is found "not guilty" because of some reasonable doubt, but everything points to gross behavior, would you also be happy for him to come back to the Flames? I for one would not be at all

-morality
-empathy for the homeless (Katz)
-being against harassment of team staff (Perry)
-being against sexual abuse and negligence towards it (Bowman & Nicholson)
-being against giving rule breakers immediate exoneration from their wrongs (Perry and Kane)
-being against disparity in the lottery system (McDavid + 3 other picks)
-being against extending PTOs to rapists (Virtanen)

Are also reasons why I don't cheer for the Oilers. But go right ahead with your "Canada" angle that conveniently overlooks all of the above.

Eh, that's fine if you disagree. Last year it was a no brainer, E=NG. I was 100% rooting for each of the Oilers' opponents and totally relieved when they finally lost.

The landscape has changed dramatically in only a year, I'm not sure I could adequately describe my feelings toward the US without dipping into profanity. It's hard to excuse Florida when they're seemingly a hotbed of support for the current administration. Threatening Canadian sovereignty is a massive deal that goes well beyond my hobby of following hockey.

I'll never cheer for the Oilers by any means as they're a garbage franchise who employ garbage people, and I'll find no joy if they win, but given the choice between boosting the spirits of some Canadian hockey fans or some American ones right now I'll hold my nose and choose the former.

Bring on the tar and feathers, I'd have done the same to anyone who took this stance last year.

The tariff war and 51st state ordeal isn't coming from Americans though. That's all Trump and his administration.

The 4 Nations final kind of mattered because of Trump and his dumb press secretary spouting off beforehand.

But this is just two cities duking it out for themselves and their own glory, and one is full of garbage people that broke the system that granted it the talent it stands on.

The Canada vs. US angle here seems forced.

Agreed. Also this is isn't a new thing in light of the tariffs - every time a Canadian team has made the final the Canada's team discussion comes up. I remember it happened with the Flames in '04. I can give the benefit of the doubt to those that feel that way but I definitely feel the opposite.

I feel like most of the "Canada's team" stuff just comes from marketing anyways. Heck, I don't even consider The Raptors or the Jays Canada's team - I live closer to Seattle, I'll support who I want to thank you very much! (although I'll admit i hopped on the Raptors bandwagon when they won it)

Wasn't Kane at Trumps inauguration?

As for "Canada's team", similar to the Nicholson angle you mentioned earlier, I barely cheer for Team Canada as "Canada's team" with all of the Hockey Canada controversary around sexual abuse and the slush fund.
