Let's be honest, you know you won't get away from the CRA by going to your island.

The ironic part is...I'm not trying to get away from the CRA. I just want them to do their goddamned jobs properly.

For the past 8 years my brother has been dealing with back condition called Spinal Stenosis. Over that time the condition has gotten worse and worse. He's had 2 operations on his neck and 3 on his back, with the last one being this past weekend. He's been offered opioids like Oxy numerous times to help relieve the nerve pain he is experiencing and he always says no to that #### as he knows that will create another problem. He just uses Tylenol.
My brother is one of the toughest SOBs you'll ever meet. He doesn't like to complain and basically solders on and deals whatever curve balls life throws at him the best that he can.
A few weeks ago his attitude changed and he said to me in a phone conversation that he doesn't know what he did to deserve all this. His back reached a point where he can't walk with a walker or walking sticks. Last Thursday morn he tried to get out of bed to get to the washroom and fell. His wife tried to help get him back in bed and she struggled doing it. After another fall she had him taken to the hospital where his Surgeon moved up the latest surgery to the weekend.
It's been hard on me watching him suffer through all this over the years.
Sorry, I just needed a place to vent.

Maybe he needs to re-consider his pain management options? I'm not familiar with spinal stenosis, but I had a condition that caused extreme pain a couple years ago and combinations of Tylenol/Advil did nothing. Fortunately in my case, the situation resolved, but it got me looking into pain management.
Yes, opioids can be a big problem, but the solution isn't forcing people to suffer with nothing but Tylenol. These options do need to be carefully managed, but if he's in that much pain, it might be worth discussing his concerns and looking into them with a medical professional who specializes in pain management.

I’m a big believer that all you want is like $10-20m and not billions. At that kind of money, you can do whatever you like and it’s gobs of money, but it’s not so much that you will be in the public eye and dealing with everything that comes with it. Plus, the added bonus (like Cliff alludes to) is that you can still hate on the rich at the same time!

People like to make boat jokes and laugh, but it's absolutely wild how expensive they are. Just yearly insurance and dock fees are unreal, like 10-20% of the boat cost, depending where you are. Did you clean and paint the hull last year? No? Probably time to do it this year, which means dry dock. Not cheap. While it's out you should probably have the whole thing pressure washed, waxed, brightworks polished. Is it a sailboat? Oh hoho, those ropes are 5 years old and all need to be replaced. Probably should replace the metal cables holding the mast up soon too. The boat specific freezer just broke, that's 10 grand. One of the Garmin nav units had a Mai Thai spilled on it, that's gonna need replacement. Have you subscribed to new charts? Need those. Solar panel wiring is all rotten, may as well do the panels too since number 3 never worked properly and the salt has eaten through the frames(salt builds up into chunks you can break off of anywhere water sprays). All the canopy fabrics and seat cushions look pretty tatty after scorching in the tropical sun, but that'll have to wait for next year! Same with refinishing all that nice teak.
And crap, a hurricane just levelled the tropical island you keep it at. Too bad hurricane insurance was 25% of the boat cost, so you passed on it. Off to the boat grave yard, better to abandon it than have to pay for salvage and disposal. This one was from Hurricane Irma.
And that's the end of your boat owning experience. Good thing you didn't pay to replace all those cushions and biminies. Would have been a waste of money.

I've been on a lot of other people's boats in my day, but the only one I own is 14 feet long and holds one person. It's still a maintenance money pit, but a small one.

I mean, we pull ours out of the water each year and moor at a buoy in the bay when it's in and the cost is basically maintenance / repairs and gas. Really not that bad. Have to figure out how to keep the sea otters out though, that's annoying.

I learned to sail on a Laser 2 in Halifax Harbour.
Great times
Looking back I can't believe they let a bunch of grade 8 kids into Halifax harbour in those boats.
Just nuts
