I find Darryl such an interesting guy as you can clearly see that he's a good guy outside of the game but there's always those episodes at the end of his tenures as Flames GM and head coach when it appears from the outside like he became unhinged.
|
Question, were there any actual reports of "episodes" or just a general sense of much of the team didn't like him and the team didn't enjoy coming to the rink? I don't recall seeing any specifics, but very likely I missed or forgot them.
I bring that up to say, hindsight is helpful. No doubt, Darryl has always been polarizing, and certainly has a shelf life. But also, I took most of what we heard to be more generic comments about the culture not being fun, vs. specific things where he crossed a line. And given what I feel we've learnt since Darryl left about that group (Tkachuk and Kadri being the exceptions), I feel like a lot of the players who likely didn't like it here, were just as much the problem (likely more) as Darryl was.

The issue wasn’t just how he treated players. It was how he treated others in the organization

Yeah, but the return would be closer to the second PLD trade than the first. That is why I just think they keep him. Crazy how quickly they blew their center depth

I never heard that before. I thought he showed a lot of respect to folks working there. Where does this come from? What happened?

It was stated a few times in the media around the time he was let go. No specifics were discussed publicly as far as I know. Believe there was also some investigation of a conflict between him and a player where the player did not want to pursue the matter.

Pospisil isn't better than Zary. Just like Skinner and Arvidsson are better players than Janmark, Fredric or Connor Brown. Come playoff time those types of players step up. Pospisil brings elite skating to the table with some skill and the ability to forecheck and get under team's skin. Why trade him unless you are worried about injuries? His contract will always be cheaper than Zary's too

Klapka becomes waiver eligible this year IIRC. He has never been through waivers thus far.
I will 100% agree that Mercer is the better player today. However, Klapka has some seriously good attributes and is trending towards being an absolute unicorn. For me, it is two things:
1) Klapka started playing like he was Tom Wilson last season. Small sample size, yes, but that's what he started looking like. I would hate to trade away Tom Wilson for a middle-six player.
2) Klapka had a great season in the AHL before last season - led the team in scoring.
I would say that based on these two consecutive seasons, I don't think that Klapka's scoring ability was simply luck or brushed aside as a heater that will never be replicated. Maybe that's all it was, but I know I would definitely hate to be the guy that traded that away. It is so damn expensive to get a big body with skill. Columbus just tied-up Olivier on a 6 year deal. If Klapka develops anywhere between Olivier and Wilson, that will really help the Flames down the road, especially in the playoffs.
I think NJ probably says no anyway to Klapka straight-up for Mercer - Mercer is the much more productive player, with room to grow yet. I just see him as a middle-six winger more than anything. Not a center, and definitely not a top-line player. I would rather keep my potential unicorn with lower trade value in my back pocket and see what happens, and if I do decide to go after Mercer, I would do it with other assets.

We could realistically be running:
Pospisil - Backlund - Klapka as a 4th line which is kinda crazy

Yes, I almost wrote it to assume Coleman traded.

Sure...
...but with perfect hindsight wouldn't it be better to get rid of every single person he had a problem with and build back from there knowing the results the past few years?

I really hope the flames don’t complicate things more than necessary. Keep and develop the young players in the system. Trade vets (hoping for Coleman and Andersson this year) for picks and/or prospects. Use the picks they have to select the players with the highest ceiling - ideally centers - even if they have some warts on their game. Look for an opportunity to trade up in the draft if possible but I would rather not trade down.
I’d be ok trading the 32nd overall pick if it’s to sweeten the return for one of the vets. For example, trading Andersson + 32nd overall to Columbus for Seiloff + 14th overall + 2nd round pick.

I - like a lot of people on this form - obviously really loved Darryl. The one thing that made me glad that he is gone is some of the stories about how he treated people in general in various parts of the organization, including people working at the Saddledome. My outlook on him really changed after that bit of news broke. That should never have been acceptable at any time.
Huska seems like such a breath of fresh air compared to Darryl.

Think I've heard more "I've heard stories about how Darryl treated staff" than I've actually heard stories.

Darryl Sutter has always been known as an incredible human being, friend, family man, and father to a terrific son outside of hockey.
Darryl Sutter the hockey player and 5-year Captain from his early till late 20s who was an absolute Playoff performer was always known as the hardest worker who expected the most outta himself and his teammates.
Darryl Sutter the hockey coach was a hall-of-fame monster behind the bench, walked away from a contract extension to focus on his son, came back only when it made sense for his family and his son first, then him, was way ahead of the analytics game, brought two terrible unsuccessful franchises to either the brink or Stanley Cup glory numerous times, but was a little bit stubborn and too mean to some folks, so his history gets a little bit tainted to a somewhat kinda funny degree.

All those things can be true but it still doesn’t excuse treating people badly
After the Flames conducted a full review, including with non players, they concluded they had no choice but to pay him 3m a year not to coach the team.
Pretty telling.
I think for whatever reason he became more of a jerk in that final season, and the world simply is less tolerant toward that type of thing. Which I’m fine with
Doesn’t mean he isn’t amazing in some way says. He’s a really complicated mixed bag of a human
