I think this the year to give Zary a good run at the C position as I think he can do well there.
Run with Kadri, Zary, Frost and Backlund as your centers and even out the ice times and play the line that are "feeling it" on a game by game basis

No player should be fixated on. The question is whether he'd be an asset here, and for what price. Maybe they can avoid sending Zary and instead send someone like Pospisil or Klapka. Then you have:
Huberdeau-Kadri-Coronato
Zary-Mercer-Farabee
Sharangovich-Frost-Coleman
Kirkland/Suniev/Honzek-Backlund-Pospisil/Klapka/Lomberg

I see moving Klapka instead as we would need to add a huge amount to get it done. If Rasmus is involved even at RS, we add the pick. Klapka has potential but has also cleared waivers. Can't imagine he has value outside of Calgary.
Pospisil isn't better than Zary. Just like Skinner and Arvidsson are better players than Janmark, Fredric or Connor Brown. Come playoff time those types of players step up. Pospisil brings elite skating to the table with some skill and the ability to forecheck and get under team's skin. Why trade him unless you are worried about injuries? His contract will always be cheaper than Zary's too

Which players in the CGY system are going to prep up Mercer? Would he play with Huberdeau and Kadri? Or would it simply be giving him PP1 time? If that's the case then at whose expanse? Are we bumping Zary, Frost, and Sharangovich to PP2?
I like Mercer as well, but I wonder how such an acquisition is going to affect a Zary, Frost, or a Sharangovich. That's why the Flames need to move some players out of the top 9 before we even look at such a move.
---
On that topic, OTT has a lot of right shot forwards, which could make them a good trade partner. Right shot forwards signed by OTT for next season: Cozens, Batherson, Pinto, Perron, Amadio, and Zetterlund(RFA). I heard they might want to bring Giroux back who's a right shot as well.

Writing that down just highlights the need for us to make some trades. We're getting clogged up on the wing. Coleman feels like the odd man odd. Farabee needs to step up this year or have fun on the 4th line I guess.
We could realistically be running:
Pospisil - Backlund - Klapka as a 4th line which is kinda crazy

Feels like the Flames have a log jam of Mercer level players at this point. Mercer seemed like a great target over a year ago. Now the Flames prospects have been developing and there seems to be an excess of mid-six guys. I don't see Mercer as having first line centre potential. It's a lateral move at best to what's already there.

I feel like when they traded for Frost they pretty much shut the door on Mercer. I still think Frost has a bit more ceiling there.

I really think Klapka is going to get another shot at the start of the season to stick on the first line with Huberdeau and Kadri. I see Farabee being our longer term Coleman replacement. Seeing him slightly increase his output over last year I think would cement that.

Completely agree, it needs to be a clear upgrade for me, aka Rossi.

This is the hard part of building like Dallas and Carolina. Conroy has tough decisions to make and probably will for the next few years. Easy to make the wrong decisions and too many top 6 potential players is a problem if those players don't fit the bottom 6 role.
Backlund will not be 4th line minutes next year. Zary is a good player, but he isn't big or physical and he isn't a good skater.
Coleman could go, but if he really wants to stay would he re-sign a Gourde type deal? Less years as he is a bit older when his contract is up.
Backlund might stay for less too.
Pospisil could be an elite playoff 4th liner.
Zary, Frost, Sharangovich, Kadri, Huberdeau, (stuck with him) Coronato is probably our top 6. It isn't good enough, at the top end. How do you get better and keep all of them? You can't, someone has to go out and you need to upgrade on them over time.

That top 6 isnt good enough. I think Conroy needs to try to take a bit of a swing for the fences here. I'm in the camp of taking a shot at Elias Petterson. I think the Canucks are Buffalo level disfunctional, I think a change of scenery reignites him. And having a strong veteran group and team culture here I think would serve him well.
To CGY
Elias Petterson
Aatu Raty
To Van
Rasmus Andersson (will help the inevitable departure of Hughes)
Sharangovich
2025 1st Rd pick

I still think Mercer, Nemec, +++ for Hughes is a deal that could happen this summer.

I love dumping the Sharangovich deal but taking on the Pettersson contract without subtracting Huberdeau is far too risky for the Flames.

Makes sense but curious if you've heard/read something from sources of just suggesting it because it would make sense?

I agree, if Petterson wasn't flawed he'd never be available. You gotta swing for the fences to get that 1C.
Pay them whatever they want really. Parekh might be the only asset I'd think twice about. Vancouver doesn't need Wolf, they pull starting goalies out of their asses every 3 years.

Wolf! Not a chance even if they did need him. At that contract Pettersen doesn't have a ton of value

You can't trade Parekh in this deal. No way.
Keep Wolf, Coronato, Parekh and the 2 1sts next year.
Anyone else can go and I'd love to see trade where we trade 2 or 3 good players for the best player and future picks.
Control your cap and add assets down the road. That needs to be the theme for the next 2 years and trust our scouts to do their job as you trade 2 for 1.

I truly can't understand how anyone derives something like hope after looking at those forward lines. We are not a good team.
