I've been in the same boat as you. I lost ALL peices of ID including birth certificate, plus $200 in cash. Not a fun experience I tell you.

First thing you should do is call the RCMP and let them know your ID is lost and are worried about identity theft. They will record your ID's you lost, then give you a case number. This helps in case there is identity theft attempted in the future.

Second, work on replacing everything.

Social insurance number (SIN)
To apply for a replacement SIN card, contact Social Development Canada at 1-800-206-7218 or visit www.sdc.gc.ca. You will be asked to prove your identity and status in Canada.

Birth certificate
Individuals born in Alberta who need a replacement birth certificate must apply through a registry agent either in person or in writing. To find a registry agent near you, visit www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca, check the yellow pages of your phone book under Licensing and Registry Services or call toll-free at 1-877-427-4088.

Alberta Health Care Card
our new card can be requested by phone, fax, mail or in person. To request a new health care insurance card, Alberta Health and Wellness at (780) 427-1432 in Edmonton, or to call toll-free in Alberta, dial 310-0000, then 780-427-1432. If you know your number a replacement card can be ordered through the phone system. If you do not know your number, proof of identity will be required. Other methods to contact the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan office are as follows; fax: (780) 422-0102 Edmonton) or mail: Alberta Health and Wellness P.O. Box 1360, Station Main Edmonton, AB T5J 2N3 or in person: 10025 Jasper Avenue NW, Edmonton or 727 - 7 Ave SW, Calgary. Office hours are 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday

I can't recall how I got my drivers license replaced without any other ID... this happened to me quite a few years back. I would recommend giving a registry a call and asking what supporting documents you need to replace a lost license and birth certificate.

edit: This is what you need to get a replacement license. http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/...documents.html

STEP ONE: go to regristry

STEP TWO: Provide birth certificate and other piece of ID(support. doc) and request new ID. (should be good to go.)

The one thing I never keep in my wallet is my SIN card. For the first reason it can be a security risk. And the second reason is it's a good piece of ID to have around in case your wallet does get stolen.

One of the best things that you can do to help yourself ahead of time is to run all of this through a photo-copier and keep it in a safe place. That way if you do have the unfotunate set of circumstances to be without your ID, you at least have a photo-copy to try to get things replaced.
