For sure! Mynt has that upscale/posh feel and HiFi is simply a cool club. I'm going to miss Mynt, but at least its end means a temporary end for Cowboys! What I cannot stand about Cowboys being a top clubbing destination in Calgary is that it's notorious for being discriminatory and is run by one of the biggest pricks in the city. Although it may be a fun place for people that are allowed in, it's a black mark for Calgary. Unfortunately this means that the people that patronize it because they like the vibe are inadvertently contributing to the staining of the city's image by keeping this place open. You may not realize it but you folks are making a racist prick a very rich man...

Could someone please explain why Cabbie from The Score always goes to Cowboys when he is in Calgary? Is it to showcase all the hot women in Calgary? From what I see on tv, Cowboys pushes a stereotype that Calgary is full of rednecks who listen to country music.

Probably something to do with the Score and Vickers having some business agreement for him to go to Cowboys. I know for a fact Cabbie is not there for the music, as he is an rnb hip hop/reggae guy. In Edmonton, he usually attends urban music joints, whereas in Calgary its always Cowboys.

Ha I find this thread funny, because both sides are pretty much bang on in there arguments, on one hand…hey if your young and like to drink party, dance, and have a good time than yeah Cowboys is a good time, but on the other hand it is full of “jockhomos” and “roid monkeys”….in my high school days I loved Cowboys went all the time and often had a good time, I have grown out of it now but I went during Stampede and had a great time

I agree. I think it's a different strokes for different folks kinda thing. Some like it, some hate it, some love it, some loathe it. I think those who criticize either way have some sort of chip on their shoulder. Except WindsorPilates who pointed out that Club staff tend to be pretty racist. It's terrible how being selective to manage the door always seems to turn into excluding non-whites. I would say 'what does that say about Calgary' but I think it's really more reflective of ownership than Calgary.

In my experience most of the night clubs in Calgary have pretty much the same crowd. Whether it be a Cowboys, Coyotes, Tequila, Tantra, Outlaws, Back Alley, Mynt etc. If it's one of those really dark places with really loud music and expensive drinks, the crowd doesn't vary much place to place. In my experience it really depends on the people you go with if you are going to have a good time or not.

I've never heard it as Bruno's Night Gallery, but yes... the Night Gallery was on 1st St. next to the Cherry Lounge and others in that area.
That was a great bar when it was open. So much character. Rolling Stone Magazine voted the washrooms there the worst in North America a couple a years ago. Great stuff!

I recall one time I was at the Cowboys and I met Cabbie, such a nice guy gave me a big hug…I told him that I was pumped that Cabbie on the street was back
It was awesome when he introduced himself it was just like the show he said
“Yo I’m Cabbie here with my D”…and than D proceed to pop out of no where and give me a high five….awesome

I'm pretty sure the way it started out was it was Bruno's (singer for The Golden Calgarians) apartment. Was just a big flat up on the second floor. cover charge was cheap and beer was $2. I remember I saw Tupelo Chain Sex there, and bought their TShirt. Anyway, after awhile I think it turned into a legit club

To me, Cowboys will always represent a part of Calgary I hate. The small amount of backwards, redneck racism that the city can't seem the shake, no matter how much it grows and embraces multiculturalism.
Not having a place like Cowboys would be a good step in getting past those sorts of issues, which Calgary will have to learn to do at some point.

To be brutally honest I don't think the 'Cowbaoys' of Calgary are going away any time soon. Alberta and calgary especailly is like the southern United states of Canada. They will preach a lot of crap but in practic it never really changes.

Calgary is nothing like the southern United States. Care to share which ones you've visited and what makes them similar?

I have been to Texas.. and given that the segrigation there is way more of a problem then here. What i was tring to get at is that alberta is Canda's verson of the US South. It would be hard to argue that rasism is not a problem here and a place like cowboys is just a representation of that. It was maybe a bold statement to compare the two but I think as far as Canada goes Alberta is the worst for backward prejudice practice.

Your basing racism in clubs as your comparison to the South? You think it's unique to Calgary or Alberta? You don't think that people of the West Indies in Toronto aren't "segregated" as you would call it when the hit the door of some clubs? Haitian's in Montreal? Asians in Vancouver? North African's in London, Paris, Amsterdam?
Where in the world would you not compare to the South?

Of course racism exists all over Canada (and the world) but from my experiences and from what i have heared from others, Calgary clubs are some of the worst for not leting in minorities. and the southern USA is said to be the worst for racism in the USA. That is all I am tring to say.

Since a bunch of people keep bringing up the racism at Cowboys I thought I would tell my story of admittance to a club in Calgary.
A bunch of us had just came from the Mynt and decided to head to Plush. We had to split up in two cabs. The first cab got there probably about a minute before us and got in fine. I was in the second cab with a guy and a girl. However the bouncer would not let us in. He told us that the club would be closing soon so they weren't letting anyone else inside. We explained that the other half of our group was just let in (by him). But he was having none of it.
So we are waiting outside and phoning our friends inside when a taxi pulls up and a group of four people get out and walk right in no problem. So we asked the bouncer why he let them in and not us. He said they were the owners, or the friends of the owners, I can't recall. Alright so we let that one slide. A couple minutes later another taxi pulls up and another group gets out. But this time we ask the people if they knew the owner or if they had VIP or anything. They said no, they didn't know the owners or have VIP or anything like that. Much to our surprise they walk right in no problem.
So we ask the bouncer again what the hell is going on. Again he gives the same thing story he did before, that the club is closing and they aren't letting anyone else in. Well I called bull because they let almost 10 people in after saying that to us. He is not budging and is also getting increasing irritated by us. By this time I am getting pretty pissed off and the female is flying off the handle. And knowing the bouncer was; A) not going to let us in, B) going to beat me up, and not the girl, and C) much, much bigger than me, I took her and we walked away.
Oh, and the races of everyone: First half of our group was half asian and half white, the bouncer was black, the two groups that got in after we were denied where asian, and our group was, me, that is white, a white south african, and a girl that was half asian and half white, but looked on the side of white almost greek, more so than asian.
Was it racism that didn't allow us to get into the club that night? I don't know. But I am having a hard time thinking of anything else that could be the factor. Now I wouldn't go to Global news with my story (something tells me they wouldn't run with it), just something for everyone to chew on.
