Wonder how many of them also believe they would be able to keep Canadian currency, pension, citizenship and passport?
National parks? Imagine a country whose tourism dollars went to another country when everyone flying into the country of Alberta went on to vacation in Banff, Canada.
The lawsuits alone by First Nations who ceded land to Her Majesty the Queen and her successors and the government of Canada "for ever", not Alberta, would probably ultimately re-open treaty negotiations. And the First Nations might want more than the $5 per person they are getting today.
And that's assuming Canada just let's us get up and leave.
It's the equivalent of an adult living in their parent's basement and then deciding it's time to be independent. And then telling your mommy that you're going to keep living in the basement but not paying rent and you still want access to your daddy's car. Good luck with that.

Say Alberta did separate, however far-fetched it likely is, how many of you would stay?
If I was still in Calgary full time I'd be immediately bailing to Nova Scotia or something. Granted that's easy for me to say because I've already left
I've spoken to a couple people who are at least open to the idea of Alberta independence and their vision of an independent Alberta seems to be something like Qatar or UAE: lots of oil money, living like rock stars, no real rules, a government that caters to the them without too many pesky social and legal repercussions. Basically they want to have it all. They are so delusion they are basically children in adult bodies.
There is no plan within the separatist movement. They openly admit in their townhalls that a portion of them want to join the states, a portion want to be their own country and a portion of them don't want to separate at all, but want to be able to use it as a negotiation tactic.
I'm not opposed to them gaining a foothold in our provincial legislature over a period of time to flesh out their charter, but the fact that they will get a referendum with this level of disorganization is an awful idea.
Smith feels like she must entertain it though because she is afraid of the former option.
They are a bunch of little factions with largely different ideas on separation, with their only commonalities being anger, victimization, and the want to separate.
I attended the town hall event in Red Deer and it was exactly what you would expect. It started with a guy in an awful toupee rattling off some weird history lesson with the energy of a squirrel on crack and Red Bull. And buy my book.
The next guy was some lawyer from Ontario with the cadence of a Ted Talk giving them all permission to not have a plan: "First you separate, then you negotiate. We don't need to have any answers now." No, you jackasses. You better have the answers nailed down and solid as granite before you even come to the table with the Federal Government. Oh, and buy my book.
The most entertaining part of the event was batty old Gordon Kesler. He rambled on like an idiot for 20 minutes, trying to find stuff on Facebook he had seen and still whining about Trudeau Classic. They're still not willing to let COVID and the vaccine go, the WEF is after us, Carney is a mastermind installed illegally as PM, and on and on. Then some guy he obviously had a beef with stood up and called him a chicken s###. Don't buy my book because "I don't read. I don't like to read" (he actually said that while looking for an meme on Facebook).
Next, Cam Davies started on about gender ideology, tampons in men's bathrooms, and a totally true story of him being on a 3 mile run with his marine buddies after getting the vaccine and someone dropping dead in front of him. And may God bless his heart for starting a class action lawsuit that he definitely won that excluded 3500 military personnel from getting the shot for religious reasons.
These are unserious people with unserious motivations and an unserious but dangerous goal.

I shouldn't be surprised they are not aware of facts.

I want to say that I would bail for sure, but the truth is that I have so many things that tie me down here.
I still have quite a few friends and family in Alberta, and every single one of them has told me that if Alberta were to actually separate, they would absolutely bail without a second thought. Some to BC, others to the east (Ontario/Nova Scotia) where a lot of them have family.

I'd probably move to BC, but would wonder what impact Alberta separating would have on BC as well.
Maybe go squat in 24 Sussex Drive since it's such an albatross.
Their interim leader was my neighbour across the back lane from my old house. He was a crotchety old bastard, his wife was the neighbourhood Karen who gave new meaning to the term "Neighbourhood Watch" and used to FLY through our back-lane but complain about everyone else driving too fast, and together did a spousal tag-team on some ethics violations shortly after he left parliament.
