I just found that it wandered a lot and felt fairly aimless.
So to start, I know nothing of the video games.
I just found Ellie to be...a little beyond unlikeable. I dont know whether it was the acting or the fact that she appears to be certifiably bi-polar? When its a character you're not really liking I just...the whole hot and cold anger with Joel I found annoying and further, I really just couldnt care less about the whole 'coming of age' angle.
Essentially...what are they doing?
Its like the whole 'Ellie is immune' plot-line just got tossed. Its still there, but they're not really doing much with it. Its just 'there.'
And then the whole 'Revenge for Joel' element didnt make much sense since she spent most of her time treating him like crap.
It just felt directionless. There wasn't anything to really latch on to as opposed to 'here are a bunch of things happening.'
So there were definitely some times where I was thinking:
- Girl goes on insane revenge mission to kill 1 person in all of post-Apocalyptic war-torn Seattle, this either wont work or she'll surely be killed.
- Girl walks into dark warehouse, surely she'll be killed.
- Girl who cant swim steals a boat, surely she'll be killed.
- Same girl who cant swim miraculously washes up ashore in a PARKA, FULL GEAR, A BACKPACK and wearing COMBAT BOOTS...surely she'll die.
- Oh the religious nuts are going to slice her up, surely she'll die.
Rinse and repeat.
It got a bit tedious after a bit.
