Alberta purchased children’s pain medication from Turkey at a price more than six times greater than what the provincial health authority normally pays for the same volume of product, according to documents obtained by The Globe and Mail.

Bureaucrats in government and at the health authority prepared briefing notes in late 2022 outlining the risks and rationale for paying MHCare to import pediatric acetaminophen and ibuprofen from Turkey’s Atabay Pharmaceuticals. They laid out several options for the government, warning that if the government chose the riskiest path - signing a deal to buy five million bottles of medicine prior to receiving Health Canada’s approval - it could end up with too much medicine, too late, or it could end up with little to no medicine despite paying upfront if they didn’t get the approval.

Five million bottles equated to roughly eight bottles for every child in the province.

However, the note also says the province could order fewer bottles at a price of $15-million for one million bottles. The note says committing to a larger volume would represent “the best overall value.”

The Auditor General of Alberta has been approved as an intervenor in the lawsuit against Alberta Health Services (AHS) brought by former CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos.
According to documents from the Court of Appeal of Alberta, the auditor general applied for permission to intervene in two related appeals in the lawsuit.

It seems strange that an impartial independent party would get involved in a legal dispute unless explicitly invited by the court. If they support the government’s position it will taint their whole investigation and if the support the defendant it implies they found some damning stuff. If they are merely there to confirm stated facts then why bother? Unless they feel that they are being misrepresented I guess?

I was wondering about that as well. I thought it was to protect evidence they have or may be getting from the fired CEO

Are they right aout it? Maybe...probably. Its what fits what the Gov has done.

This isnt the whole thread just some highlights, its linked at the bottom as well as the court decisions.

GovAB also requested an injunction barring M from sharing any evidence with anyone else, citing “confidentiality”. M’s lawyer argued that GovAB is using the courts to engage in a fishing expedition in an effort to find out what evidence has already gone to the RCMP & the Auditor General.

Justice Yungwirth ruled that GovAB can question M under oath about the nature of the AHS documents, & who she shared docs with, but M can’t be questioned about docs she may have given the RCMP and/or the Auditor General. GovAB is appealing the decision.

Then, the AG applied for intervenor status in the appeal, likely in the effort of protecting the AG’s ongoing independent investigation into M’s claims of contract procurement irregularities, as well as any evidence already in their possession or possibly still in the possession of M.

GovAB REALLY wants to know what evidence the RCMP, & AG have. They want to know so bad that they are appealing a decision that granted them the opportunity to question M, but not about cops & AG.

The GovAB appears to be doing everything they can to thwart the Auditor General’s, & the RCMP’s, investigations into claims of corruption at the highest levels of our provincial government, contained in the former AHS CEO’s lawsuit.
