The Panthers did change their style of play, and had identified Huberdeau as someone that didn't fit the way they wanted to play. Winning a president's trophy is not the same thing as being a solid playoff team at times, and they specifically had to find a way to get through Tampa.
I think Huberdeau would have struggled in Florida had he remained there. Probably not to the same degree as he struggled here in Calgary as there were many other changes that he had to adapt to.
As someone who criticized Huberdeau a LOT in his first two seasons here, I don't think I have criticized him once at all last season. He is a guy you win with now. Yes, the salary may be a tad high, but I think he is the type of player you can now win with in a long playoff series. He is good in all three zones. He doesn't turn over pucks any longer (and there were days I thought he was secretly wearing the opposing team's jersey underneath the Calgary one!), he is great along the boards, he is great in the middle of the ice, he is great on the PK, on the PP, he is great in front of the net, great in the slot.. he is a complete player now.
Everyone talks about Weegar being the next captain, but I think it may be Huberdeau. I can only imagine how he was a 'hero' in Florida, and then suddenly getting traded to Calgary and then have the distinction of breaking the NHL record for most drop-off in points, to being widely pointed at as the worst contract in the entire league, to being benched in a game by Huska and having a HUGE story made out of it - never once did he hide from the media. Never once did he blame someone else, or anyone other than himself. He never gave up. From day one here, I saw him working hard and he continues to be a hard-working player today.
I love Huberdeau now. I don't think he will go down as my favourite Flame of all time, but I really do love the player and the person that he is. I never hated him - I don't really hate players unless they are bad characters, regardless of performance. I never hated Gary Leeman, for instance, since it wasn't as if he forced the trade to happen. I felt sorry for Gary Leeman, but I never loved him either. Huberdeau just stuck with it. He did his best. I just love how he never shied away from anything and just battled until he reinvented himself as a really complete player.

^^^^^ Huberdeau is hungry again and you see it. He's no captain of mine.
He doesn't speak genuinely IMHO he says what needs to be said. That said I think he also wears another jersey under his jersey and it's neither a flame jersey or a Panther kit.
Conroy needs to work thr phone with that team and bring in some players suited to the Flames style of play plus in return get younger players suited to what this team is trying to change.
Players that will compliment Frost and Farabee or use them ....one or both as add ons to make this team better overnite
I'm impatient with this rebuild and I'll admit it . When I hear BIG game hunting i hope they mean it. Let's get Bedard and McKenna here . I know Bedard want s to be a Canuck but I'm tired of this teams NOT having a nuclear scoring threat ....anyone else ?
I hope something strange happens though and think Huberdeau could pop 100 points again with whatever Craig's cooking . I actually think it'll be something no one saw coming and it'll change things alot here .

Really confusing post. Pretty sure Huberdeau nixed any idea of being a Hab.
Also I really hope Conory isn’t bringing in guys to play the style we did.

At least you can “go get” Bedard. Not sure how you do that with McKenna.

Step 1. Go
Step 2. Get him.
Just that easy.

I think I'm a little late because Canada is eliminated, but I'm glad Parekh didn't play in the World Championships. I think the Flames didn't want him to either, and for the same reason they didn't send him to Wranglers. He's played a lot of hockey uninterrupted for a couple years.
Could use time off to grow and train and buy jeans or whatever to get acclimatized to Calgary. The Worlds are a consolation prize for guys who get eliminated from the playoffs early.

Bedard wants to be a Canuck? based on what?
All I've ever seen is Bedard saying he wants to be a Hawk for a long time.
The rest is simply people speculating.
Chicago is likely closer to competing than Vancouver, simply because the Canucks are likely going to get worse as the Hawks improve.
Now getting McKenna means tearing it down to the skids. A little late for that I would think.

Yeah, but it's not like the Flames have much control over that.
But wouldn't that be sweet.

If these guys all become NHLers, then we don't have to trade our annual 2nd or 3rd for a plug D-man going into the playoffs like Tre used to do.

I don't think you want to set yourself up for disappointment, as they'll probably still do it when they're in the contending window. This and most other teams don't like using inexperienced defenders if they're looking at a long playoff push.
If this team was a little stronger this year and had more expectations, they would have almost certainly brought in a rental defender rather than rely on Soloyov as the depth guy in case of injuries.
Hopefully, Conroy won't have to pay as much for depth players, but he will pay picks for rentals when the time comes.
