Much like his son, he had a high approval rating with younger, progressive voters early on in his career. Towards the end of his term, it dropped. That’s obviously not uncommon. But his legacy isn’t highly renowned; more so polarizing. And it wasn’t just small pockets of Alberta and Saskatchewan, it was the large majority. Again, not uncommon for farmers and ranchers to be anti progress. Not to mention the alienation of western Canada, as a whole.

I believe he rose to prominence by sheer luck and his ability to look good on camera. It was the tail end of the 60s and the middle of the civil rights movement and those god damn hippies!!

I agree it was sort of taken out of context but the reason it stung and got the play it did was the quote coupled with the Canadian Wheat Board. Farmers had very little freedom to market their wheat and by law could only sell their cereals through the Board. With low prices and high interest rates this quote seemed incredibly out of touch and insulting. “Why should I sell your wheat??” To which farmers replied, “Because it’s illegal for us to sell it anywhere else.”
