Potentially a chance (low) a team does if Toronto beats Florida .
Zero if they don’t

Again - there’s some misconception Carolina built a team without being bad for a long time
They didn’t
They finished in the bottom 13 seven times in 8 years starting in 2013.
They drafted a lot of top of the draft talent that contributed to their success (they ended up trading most - but their 2nd and 3rd playoff leading scorers were picked with those picks)
Even Aho was 35th overall because they had a bad record and one of the top picks in the 2nd round
They are well managed but they were bad for a long time and collected a lot of top assets with those picks
Flames have a 9th overall and a 13th overall as the only self drafted high picks in thier potential core . Wolf might be our Slavin / gem found late - but we are missing so much young talent and need years of properly rebuilding if you want to emulate the Carolina model
|
So the key is be bad for a long time, have almost none of those picks contribute to your success but have an extended bad period as a pre requisite for success? Jarvis was not even their own pick, it was acquired in a trade (which is something Conroy has done 3 times now, acquired another first round pick).

And they haven't rushed out and overpayed anyone, including their RFAs. In hindsight, their only boneheaded free agency move that I can remember was the KK offer sheet, but it was a decent risk to take at the time.

Yeah, you are absolutely right.
I didn’t aim my talking point correctly.
It was based on they do not give out contracts because they feel they need to win today or this year, they are fine with walking away from them and losing the assets they could have traded them for because they’ve already been so great with all of their other assets in that time.
Slow and steady moving upwards with a war chest not a send it and hope for the best.
San Jose model until it wasn’t.

Bennett would just be another middle 6 forward that can't score on this team.
51 points on the Panthers is probably 35 points on the Flames.
Marner's probably skilled enough that his production might go down a little, but he'd still likely be a PPG player at least for a few seasons.

Bennett would actually be an extremely savvy pickup for the type of culture the Flames are building.
It's just not "sexy" because he's already been through here and many have a sour taste from what he left on the table (even though his opportunity was limited).
But Bennett also feels like a pickup a playoff team goes for when they're trying to put themselves over the top. We're not quite there yet.

I love Sam Bennett, was unfortunate the circumstances which he was moved. However, in no way do I think the Flames should bring Bennett back for the price he would command. In addition, the fans would initially welcome him back happily and then crucify him when he tops out here as a 35-40 pt player.
Also pretty sure Bennett wants nothing to do with coming back to the Flames, unless the money is absurd.

I think the Panthers will find a way to make it work with Bennett. Him making 6.5 there is like making 8 in a high tax market. He fits really well there, and he's had a lot of success. I thought he struggled with the pressure of being the highest pick in franchise history when his game didn't get to the next level. So if he signs somewhere as an expensive free agent a lot of that pressure will come back. Bennett stikes me as a guy who'll value the role and success that he's had with the Panthers to the point that he'll try and make it work there.
One rumor I saw yesterday was the idea of the Flames getting Kyrou from the Blues. Can't remember who it was, but the idea was that the Blues only have 3 picks in this coming draft, and trading Kyrou would be a way for them to recuperate some of that lost draft capital. I don't think the Blues are up against it to the point where they'd need to move out a guy like him since Krug is now LTIR for life. I don't know enough about Kyrou's underline numbers to know if he's any type of play driver. Seems to be a decent goal scorer who had a better overall season this year after a couple of seasons where he got points, but infuriated coaches with his play in all three zones. So maybe the Blues think it's a chance to sell high.

Absolutely no to Bennett. I dont understand why anyone would want to. Sure, he elevates to a respectful ~0.75ppg in the playoffs (0.818 this playoffs, 0.736 last, 0.75 3 season ago) but he still hasn't cracked 60 points in the regular season, or even been on pace to do so given he misses a decent chunk of games each season.
He plays a hard game and takes a lot of penalties. There isn't any room on the Flames roster right now, and we can find better options for 2C (or hopefully 1C pushing Kadri to 2C)

I’m not so sure. In 2023 the Blues picked three times in the first round. Given the way they played after the coaching change I doubt, very much, they move Kyrou for picks. They signed those offer sheets last year to get better now. Trading one of their core pieces for picks would be at odds with that organizational direction.
Sounds like a not-so-well thought out trade rumour if you ask me.

These really aren't "rumours". They are posters on boards suggesting trades.

I don't think we need to worry about the Flames going after Bennett. Treliving will overpay for him day1 to make sure he lands a "big fish".

I honestly think the plan last summer was to bottom out.
They didn't spend to the cap.
They traded their starting goaltender.
They rolled with basically two NHL confirmed defenseman.
All of this after moving most of their UFAs for picks, and projects.
And then they won.
So does he make sure that doesn't happen again and move some of Kadri, Coleman, Andersson and not bring in replacements? Or does he pivot because they were better than expected?
For me I look at the offensive metrics (31st in five on five shooting percentage) and wonder if they slide. I guess Parekh will help the transition to some degree and maybe improve those numbers.
But I still wonder if he moves some pieces to get back to the rebuild plan that he envisioned but didn't get.

Only way I like a Bennett deal is shorter term high AAV.
If his baseline ufa value is 7x7, there could be some logic for both sides to go 4×9.
You would roll with Kadri Bennett as your 1-2 for 4 years than they both come off.
It would bridge the gap for any young centres they get in the next couple years and there would be a huge player development upside I believe.
The Huberdeau chemistry shouldn't be discounted here.
Plus he's another asset if things go sideways. Put minimal trade protection on the deal and he is worth a significant amount at a future deadline with retention.

No matter where he signs, Bennett will get a NTC/NMC. Players of his stature and age almost always do.

Bennett’s camp should be doing a 7 year deal. Makes no sense for any term less.

He probably will, but it makes lots of sense to take a shorter term higher AAV for him if his goal is to max out his career earnings.
Sure, there is risk, but Bennett hitting UFA again at age 33 with a rising cap probably gets another 4 year deal at good money.

That's how I see it too. I don't think the plan is to pivot just based on one unexpectedly solid season, especially when they have been playing in the margins all year long. On top of this, Conroy had a front-row view to the 2015 team, and that one saw (arguably) the rebuild being sped up. At least during that season, it was being driven mostly by the youth on the team.
This past year, Wolf (and Vladar) were impactful, but most of the push came from the older players. Does Conroy add to this now? Or does he stick with the original plan and just focus on the draft? Does that mean taking out another peg or two?
If there is ever a 'window' to pick high for a few years from, it is now. Building is a few years out, and Mckenna-Dupont-Maddox(?) is a pretty good window. Are the owners ok with this window? Or do they force Conroy to get back into the playoff picture?
I guess we will find out this off-season based on his moves. Until then, I am not sure what the real direction is here.
