At 6'4", 215 lbs, he'll be an NHLer

I really hope that Kerins makes improvements to his footspeed.
It's not impossible at his age. The NHL game is explosively fast, all the players are so quick on their edges.

In the radio spot Gilbertson mentioned an article he wrote about Stromgren.
It really is the most refreshing take I think I've heard from a bubble player.

Quote:
“I’ve gotta be pissed off that I didn’t do a good job to give myself a better chance,” Stromgren said after his end-of-season chit-chat with team brass. “It’s my third year (in North America) next year, so it’s just going to get less and less opportunities. You’ve got young guys coming in. I’m still a young guy, but you have even younger guys coming in. They want to take your spot and you want to keep them away from your spot. You have to get pissed off. You have to do your best to not give them your spot.

Quote:
“The older you get, the less time you have left. You don’t get a hundred opportunities. You only get a certain amount. And if you’re not ready to take advantage of those opportunities, you’re probably not going to be an NHLer. You need to have that mindset, ‘If I get three shots, I’ve gotta be good at all three shots.’ ”

A big concern with Kerins is his fitness, scoring poorly in training camp again. Similar to Pelletier and many others before him even. I don't know if Kerins has the off-ice work ethic to break through at this point given his age.
Unfortunate as you would think these guys would look at two leaders in Backlund and Andersson, both of whom struggled with off-ice habits as youngsters trying to break into the NHL, but flourished once they realized they had a choice to make. Backlund in particular went from subpar fitness to fittest Flame in a decade, what a story of dedication.

It's not just leg day. You get a sense of his overall frame. A lot of potential there if he works hard. Working out with Pospisil was probably a good start, but he needs to take it up a notch and add some muscle.

Apparently, it was a lot better last summer:
Quote:
IMPROVED CONDITIONING
Ask anybody about Kerins’ fantastic fall and they always start by talking about his summer.
As Conroy summarized: “He came into camp in better shape — a lot better.”
Indeed, Kerins posted career-best scores in the annual fitness-testing rigamarole. He credits those improved results to maturing into his body, explaining that he has “always been a bit of a late bloomer.”
He proudly reported that he added five pounds of muscle over the off-season.
“I do believe, in my heart, that his training this summer took a different level,” said Ray Edwards, the Flames director of player development. “Whether that’s changing different things or him having a more focused mindset or just him understanding that this is a big year for him, he did the work and you can see it.

His ongoing issue is that he's just way too bad of a skater for a guy his size.

Pat had Ray Edwards on and there were some interesting comments he made about Morin. Basically that no one (including him) was happy with his camp this year. But there have been a lot of ups and downs over the last 2 years, and there had to be some tough conversations with him about what he needed to do. But they are happy with how he's committed to that and how he's playing now including in the playoffs.
Reading through the lines, I wonder if there was a conditioning issue.

It's mostly skating . And for those who hate the Danielle Fujita talk why do you think the flames have her on the payroll?
Examples go all the way back to Giordano okay. There was a huge difference for Mark.
These guy use so much extra energy and waste strides , power without edgework and Danielle's work doesn't Include she knows positional play as well.
Yeah teach them how to skate faster and that's great but what coach, Gm would want a teacher not understanding the fundamentals of the game and how to apply skating per zone?
They are learning how to stop, accelerate, change direction, glide, and be more efficient within they're over all conditioning....it all ties together .
Guys playing 20 + minutes regular season then 30 + minutes playoffs and overtime combined are the guys that win games .
Anybody look at Matthew Tkachuk and say wow he's a phenomenon at skating? Absolutely NOT . But positionally and having better edgework as a result of learning in our system i credit a ton of his current unicorn success.
He'd tell you no different.
Then you look at Johnny and his edgework + his skill God rest his soul and wow.
Our prospects adding muscle, growing from teenage bodies into men and re coordinating bodies to faster speeds , more impacts , harder everything makes me wonder what athletes are better than hockey players having to adapt so much so fast . ?? Anybody??
Just elated we can have this discussion about our future.
New building, New GM , new prospects in a deep pool who are generating more promise daily , a hungry fan base passionate for more ....this as a day 1 fan is as excited and twitterpated as I've ever been EVER.
Still disappointed however CBL has not yet weighed in on beast levels yet .
