Should the Flames consider an making an offer sheet for Morgan Geekie? He's a good player, 26, and I think he'd fit here nicely. The max AAV to avoid paying a first rounder is $4,680,076, so it's a question of would the Bruins match the offer at that AAV. I think they would. So if you go above that, you can go up to $7 Mil and pay a 1st and 3rd. Realistically he would get something in the neighborhood of 5 to 5.5.
Mang re-signed here for $5.8 and 3 years following his 35 goal season, but never returned to that level. Geekie is coming off a 33 goal season. It might be a big risk giving up a 1st and 3rd to get him, but if you can get him for $4.68AAV and a 2nd rounder, it would be worth it IMO.

We have enough of those guys he shot 23% double his best seasons of 12% and 7 goals. Not worth a 2nd and offer sheet.

Pipe dream
Trade for RFA vilardi and McTavish.
Flames have 2 centers for next 7/8 years and don't have to worry.
Trade Anderson. Bring in Byram.
Sign Marner.

Say goodbye to Parekh, Coronato, Zary etc. if you’re trading for Vilardi and McTavish

True, but they may not have any choice in the matter.

The problem with the Flames offense is we have skilled passers but we lack true snipers. Marner is a very skilled passer but not a sniper. I fear that if we sign Marner to a monster contract, he becomes Huberdeau 2.0 and we still don't have a guy who can consistently bury grade A scoring chances these passers create for each other.
Kadri led the team with 35 goals. A nice total, tied for 18th in the NHL, but that's a career high and he will be 35 next season, I don't think we'll see that number from him again. Would love to be proven wrong though.

He has 118 goals the last 4 years. That’s 30 average. I wouldn’t say he doesn’t score.

We also have Coronato, Sharangovich, Farabee paid to score goals. You can add in Kadri as well but how long do you expect 70 point seasons from him. Those 3 players scoring will compensate for other totals of the older players going down. It will take 2-3 high end elite players to get the offence going and a change in our system.

He's the ONLY Flame who scored 30+ last season.
Hopefully Coronato can take a big step forward next season and put more puck in net. A fully healed Sharky should score more as well.
But if we don't acquire a shoot-first forward who has shown he can put puck in net, it's going to take every young player to take a step forward next year to get our offense on par with most playoff teams.
I don't know if Marner is the answer. Too much of a pass-first player for the kind of money he's going to be commanding.

I was talking about Marner sorry. He is probably good for 25-30 goals. We won’t find that goal scoring outside the roster. Coronato is our best bet to be that guy.

Imagine the space he’d get with Marner on the ice at the same time…

Yeah that wouldn't be great but I get the feeling it will be Marner or broke. Maybe Ekblad or Pionk if they are moving on from Andersson. A lot of the other top UFA's don't make a lot of sense from age perspective. I imagine all the players I listed would not likely choose the Flames anyway as they will all have a lot of options.

Pionk signed a 6 year extension with WPG in April. This probably helps the Flames though in getting good value for Andersson though, as Ekblad will be the only top pair D in free agency and the teams that strike out may look to Andersson next. Maybe someone will jump the queue and snag Andersson at the draft.
Either way, I don’t see the Flames going for Ekblad. Probably going to sign2nd or 3rd pairing D only and promote from within

I know I'm late to this party but I'm all in favour of adding 1 "big game" UFA in each of the next 2-3 years. (It almost never works to add more than one star player by UFA at the same time as it is way too disruptive to team chemistry -- see, Nashville this year, Minny when they added Parise and Suter, or any of the dead puck NYR teams).
Try to get Marner this year. Try to get Makar next year.
We have too much talent to finish bottom 10 next year. In my view all the people saying "here comes mediocrity" are ignoring that that is exactly what we will be if we do nothing. Add 1-3 star players by UFA and hope that some of our picks exceed expectations. That's the boat we're in, folks.
