How about water cannons that clear the crosswalk as soon as the signal goes solid red. Having trouble getting across in time? Maybe these 280psi water jets will help.
I am all in for hosing pedestrians.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

While that is the intent of the law, here in the GTA there are some walk signals that start flashing 24 seconds before the flashing stops. 24 seconds is an eternity to cross a crosswalk, and it's teaching people that they have plenty of time even if they don't start before it starts flashing.
Yeah if they want a vehicle only phase just have a solid hand at the end of the phase rather than start the count down so early. 12 seconds would be more than enough time to clear.
6th ave and 4th st does this in Calgary where the start of the phase still has solid hands. It’s such a simple solution here

If you’re walking and crossing the street and can't stop looking at your phone it shouldn't be a crime to hit and kill you.
I cross one somewhat busy intersection daily and once I'm on the road I'm always watching because I've had some close calls where people make left turns without paying attention. One time guy made a left turn straight at me while I was crossing and swerved at the last minute which was kind of scary. Other times I can feel the breeze behind me as vehicles make a left turn just as I've crossed the middle of the road which is illegal but a lot of Calgary drivers simply don't understand crosswalk rules (or they don't care). I simply can't imagine crossing a busy street in Calgary with my face buried in my phone. Seems like a good way to get hit by a car.
Maybe I’m lucky, but I can’t recall seeing a pedestrian cross the street while staring at their phone. Not recently anyway.
You gotta think distracted driving is far more common than distracted walking. It certainly looks that way by how many drivers I see fiddling with their phones/onboard displays while driving.

I would say it's probably pretty equal. It's not like every driver has their heads buried in their phones. It's the ones that don't move on green lights because they are on their phones or weaving in and out of their lane. Just like a lot of pedestrians actually still look both ways and walk through paying attention while others just have their heads in their phones. Phones and people are the common denominator and the fact that many of us just can't put them down.
A few months ago I saw pedestrians on 3 corners all looking to cross E-W. You need to hit the button on this one. Not one person pressed it of the 8 or so people waiting. So the E-W went green, but they didn't get a walk sign. They all just waited for the light to change back to red. One guy with a low hoodie, giant can headphones, and phone in his hand, once the light went red decided that was his moment to cross. If not for the slow acceleration of the school bus and attentive driver, he would have been road paste because the vehicle right of the bus was hauling, and the bus stopping was the only thing that had the guy look up.
Drivers, pedestrians...all dumb. I think I see far more people driving while using phones than 5 years ago.

I blame the dreaded ?-????? license plates. So many of those drivers are totally distracted, and if they’re not just staring at their phone they’re failing to signal, drifting between lanes, parking in busy lane (saw this downtown twice yesterday, not even next to a curb, literally just parked in the lane next to a lane of parked cars), etc.
This is probably one area where society has gone too far in. We need to pull back and heavily increase enforcement. The roads feel way more lawless and drivers feel way more ignorant and dangerous than I can ever remember in my lifetime. I’ve driven in plenty of major North American cities… I think Calgary has become the worst for bad drivers.

This is another example of why we need to bring bullying back.
Get on the horn. Flip these guys off. Ride their asses flashing your brights. Scream obscenities at them.
I do my part. I have a train horn and a clown horn installed in my truck. I don't give these fktards an inch. Slow in the merge? I'm flashing my brights and honking. Put on your signal light when I'm beside you and expect me to rearrange my life around letting you in because you have no idea to plan ahead or get in front of me or behind me on your own? Okay, I'm not helping you.
Gotta kick these birds out of the nest. It's sink or swim. Tiptoeing around their stupidity doesn't help.
BTW, no rage involved. I'm not a road rager. I actually don't get angry very often and when I do I keep it at a 2/10. Don't think I've raged above a 3/10 in years.

They're just looking out for their own safety, you never know when a fellow pedestrian might lose it on you!

I've always wanted a train horn. I see an abnormal amount of dogs in mid loaf and I find if I honk they pinch early because it startles them and and then now its a struggle for the owner.

Good news is they're pretty cheap. They come with their own little air compressor to power the horns and they're easy to install.

My favourite way to create struggle for dog owners is when I'm in a car and there's a dog in a car beside me at a red light is to whistle. I stare straight ahead stone faced to look 100% innocent, but my pitch is perfect to make a dog lose its mind even with all windows rolled up. Helps make the day a little brighter.

Played myself. Shortly after I posted this I was driving on a 60 km/hr road and had someone two cars ahead of me slam their brakes and come to a complete stop to let someone coming up in a merge lane, who could have naturally fit in behind them, in.
Problem is I can never tell anymore if the latest thing I’ve seen is the worst thing I’ve seen. Sure seems like it. But I’ve definitely never seen anything like that before.
Was expecting the person to be so old they’re ready for death as I swerved around and cruised by. Nope, just looked like they were having a total normal day.

At least they weren't slamming their brakes and coming to a complete stop like this guy.
I actually had a huge laugh with the indian spammer yesterday. I had four calls from "telus" india style yesterday so for the last one I just said while laughing "dude, you guys have to stop phoning me its ridiculous", he actually said I know and sorry and started laughing along with me, we had a good chuckle.
