Well of course he has a better path if he can prove he can play the harder position but he’s not a lock to make it on the wing today let alone pencilling him in as a center.

Well, I am pretty sure you answered your own question. We have too many obstacles to ever tank in the bottom 5. McKenna? Never gonna happen. DuPont? Ditto. The minute Wolf got starting minutes in Calgary is when any chance of doing a full tear down scorch rebuild went out the window.
Our best course of action is doing exactly what Conroy is doing right now; nothing. We have the cap space to make the extensions necessary, such as Coronato, soon to be Wolf, and Zary. We also could still overpay for a solid veteran on a 2–3 year deal, hopefully a defenseman that can play in the top 4. I was thinking someone like Orlov or Provorov. To stay on the topic of "nothing", we have 4 picks in the top 64, we'll find some talent there. And another 2 picks in the top 32 next season. We need to be patient, especially with our prospect pool still fresh and still needing development and seasoning.

If he is a center then the pressure look at offer sheets or trades drops. I think he has top six center potential as well. If the plan for center is:
Kadri-zary-frost-backs
I am on the offer sheet trade train for a center just not completely convinced on Zary. Damn shame about the injuries and like the langkow comparison as i think thats where management is gearing to center situation short if an eichel like trade falling in our lap.
Have said it for a while we have a glut of wingers use some of that excess for s center.

If that is our centre depth next year, maybe we will finally draft

Based on that brilliant comment we should have drafted top 4 this year, not

If thats our C depth and Backlund is anchoring the 4L I'd say we're in alright shape honestly.

I'm hoping the Flames have told him to work on the position this offseason, and I'd like to see a long look at Huberdeau - Zary - Coronato this year, as it really feels that that line should work if Zary can figure out the centre position at the NHL. Zary has a pretty good shot, and a developing two way game, so that could work well with a hard working shooter and Huberdeau's playmaking.
|
I agree with this. I really hope Zary is returned to the centre position next year and I would love to see him with Coronato. My preferred pairings for the forwards would be:
Huberdeau-Kadri
Coronato-Zary
Sharangovich-Frost
Coleman-Backlund
Then mix in the rest of these wingers depending on their play/chemistry with those pairings:
Posposil
Klapka
Farabee
Stromgren/Kirkland
Lomberg

I like Wolf a lot but it's a huge assumption to think he might not have a sophomore jinx, especially if Andersson and Hanley go away.

Dont agree.
I expect both frost and farabee to have much better years offensively. If what we saw from Zary pre injury is what he is a fifty point center then our depth isnt bad at all.
A lot of people want to ignore kadri played at near first line levels last year. Biggest trouble was the drop to the next guy.
If zary and frost start looking like top six centers and backs is there just to do the heavy defensive lifting, even if kadri drops off a bit the team should still be better off.
I am still on the make a trade, or offer sheet for someone you think has top line potential.

Is Anderson an off season move or a trade deadline move?
I wouldn't be surprised if the Flames held onto him until TDL.
Help the Flames with another playoff push and an opportunity for Anderson to improve his trade value (hopefully)

Sharks definitely have interest in Andersson and they aren't on the 6 team NTC list. Pionk was their target before he was signed. They are looking at a right shooting top 4 defenseman. Ekblad is another player high on their list.

Ken Holland is the target for the Isles GM position as per Arthur Staple in the Islanders media.

I'f I'm a team interested I think he's a guy I want all season. His contract is attractive, and he's a long haul effective guy. And the "wait to improve his trade value" idea has a possible downside that he decreases it.

Why not consider bringing in some young blood into the NHL. It seems that it is always the same recycled GMs and Coaches that go around.

Hmm well since SJ's 2nd overall is out of the question for the 25 draft, I wonder if we could pry their 26' first round pick for Andersson, contingent on an extension. SJ have tons of cap room, and even more now Couture is LTIR retiring. Considering the young core they have has shown alot of potential with Celebrini leading the way, plus the fact they'll be adding another stud at 2nd overall.. you'd have to think they start making moves sooner rather than later to plug the holes in their roster that the draft picks aren't covering (RD).
Then again these rebuilding clubs like the Sharks/Hawks likely think they're still gonna be terri-bad again next season and I'm inclined to believe them, so it's probably a pipe dream to get our hands on an unprotected 1st from them. Would just be great to find a trade partner for Andersson with a club at or near the basement though.

Could be a top ten protected 1st round pick. That hedges their bet that they will be better next year. Something like this:
To San Jose:
Andersson (50% retained next year) and then signed to an extension
To Calgary:
San Jose’s 2026 1st round pick (top ten protected)
Bystedt
