If you're going to rock down to anywhere it ought to be Electric Avenue and then you can determine whether or not you want to take it higher.

For someone who claims to be well traveled, this makes it sound like you’ve spent your entire life in the suburbs of a small/medium sized city.
This is not how it works. There is no parking shortage in calgary, at all.

For weird anecdotals, it takes a whopping 29 minutes by transit to get from Super Potato to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Calgary isn’t doing too badly, or maybe Tokyo needs to step things up.

How 'Super' could that potato be if it takes a half hour to get there?

10th between 4th and 1st can be ultra busy. You've got great resturaunts like Luca and Pampa and Rodney's on that corner. Then Craft, The National and Greta all on the same stretch.

A ton of cities around the world you can’t even drive into areas like 17th. Taxi/Uber have to buy a special permit to enter the zone. You park in a lot on the edge and use your feet for the rest of the way like god intended.

I was mostly speaking in jest, because their complaint didn't make any sense. But currently on 14th and 15th Ave they have painted single-one way lanes.
14th and 15th Ave were changed from two-way streets to single lane one-way streets to accommodate bus traffic that would have to be diverted during the 17th Ave reconstruction (well, it was all traffic, but buses in particular were sensitive to the space limitations the detour presented). 14th and 15th are narrower than 17th so making it a single lane is how they could keep parking on both sides and keep buses moving efficiently, but did leave a bit of extra room so painted cycle lanes were added (painted lanes suck, but do help get people used to the idea to a dedicated cycle space
Even though 17th Ave Construction has finished and the buses have left, they kept the configurations on 14th and 15th Ave as they sorted out the long term plans (repaving, water main repairs, accessibility improvements, etc.)
14th Ave will go back to being a two-way street with parking on each side, while 15th Ave will remain a one-way street, remove the painted cycle lane in order to build a protected cycle lane that will match the rest of the Cycle Track Network. This will remove a lane of parking on 15th Ave since it won't be able to fit the two-way protected cycle track, a vehicle lane, and both rows of vehicle parking.

Which Super Potato are you talking about?

It's not that super anymore; the hordes of tourists have mostly wiped out the good stuff they used to have. They are pretty lame now, you're a decade too late. Trader and Book Off are pathetic shells of their past too.

I was there about 6 years ago in Akhibara, and don’t have much to compare it to.
But anyway, was just using it in an example in getting between two places in a city that is highly regarded for its public transportation. The takeaway being that it doesn’t mean because it takes 36 or whatever minutes to get between two arbitrarily chosen locations that our transit system is broken. And also driving between my two arbitrarily chosen locations is faster than taking transit in Tokyo.

What grinds my gears is I decide to allow the party I wanted to vote for to plop a sign on my lawn, they have 72 hours per bylaw to get them post election, literally every party but the liberals had them cleaned up the next day. My street and neighbouring streets still have red signs everywhere. Campaign office is closed and no longer monitoring calls… of course. Contacted them through their website, and submitted a complaint to bylaw. I don’t care what party you are, come clean up your trash as promised.

Next time just go right to bylaw to be honest. What riding are you in?
Election signs should be allowed on personal property if you want and that's it, and/or strict control on public space.

I guess the current 14th and 15th Ave lanes count as "one". Just saying the city always pairs, which of course makes sense.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/hgrrrDapVRqLwMDM9 One could argue that it's actually the slowest option as walking could be done in probably be done quicker than the Google time.
Another option of literally going from LRT to middle of 17th option in the further south it's 45-60 minutes if all goes well.

Gather spots and locations no matter what require quick, fast and efficient transit, parking availability for those with a car or meeting people and also require vibrancy. Downtown Calgary is not a vibrant area for a variety of reasons.
People sometimes defend weird things here without actually thinking. If Calgary transit is taking a long time to get you somewhere central locally within 5-10 km's, people will drive as that is the best option. Those that drive require parking infrastructure.
This isn't an anti bike lane post, this is a weird city policy post. Shut down 17th Ave to full auto traffic 1000% year round. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and turn 15th Ave into the main E/W route with zero parking for cars. Might be some serious blow back from residents and business in the area.
The city and the residents are constantly complaining about noise in the summer on 17th from cars. Shut it down and make it 100% car free. The flip side of it though is all the car infrastructure that you need. Parking, Uber/Taxi/Skip drivers and the issues associated with that.
I have traveled enough and spent enough time in places with very vibrant centers in very small cities. You need vibrancy, walkability and infrastructure for cars/transit and transportation. Getting people in and out.
I just don't see how adding 2 separate bike lanes and losing parking for businesses and local's is the smartest way. Add 1 sure, but is 2 required? What problem is it solving?

Give examples, man.
Tough to argue your thesis without providing examples.
