FFG has their own dice system which is interesting, they refer to it as narrative dice. Basically it's a pass/fail system that scales in difficulty. On top of the pass fail, there are advantage and disadvantage die. So you can succeed, but with a disadvantage, or the other way around.

For instance, you roll to shoot your blaster at a Storm Trooper, you fail the roll and miss, however rolled 2 advantage symbols, so the GM could interpret that as you missed your shot wide left, but hit the control panel for the blaster door and it closed on top of the Storm Trooper.. or something to that effect. It gives the GM some wiggle room, and its encouraged that players come up with their own advantages and disadvantages, and then reward their creativity, roleplaying etc..

I really like it.. but obviously the standard 5E system is just the gold standard still. It is nice to try something different, and FFG is known for their polish and amazing artwork.

My 11 y/o son is interested in trying D&D. Had me blow the dust off some of my old manuals and it made me realize I am in no shape to DM. Would Sentry Box be the best place to find a seat for a beginner?

Going to play tonight! Unfortunately it's over zoom as everyone's all over canada and the US. Owlbear rodeo has been really good for us in terms of maps and dice rolling

My son has a teacher who would host every wednesday at noon. The teacher moved to an online program and was hosting once a week but that has slowed down. I think I will try the meetup group that troutman has posted about. He's 14 years old. I'd like to learn how to play as well.

Check Imaginary Wars, I think they have D&D for beginners on the first Sunday of the month

Started a campaign in January and been running my group through the Lost Mine of Phandelver. Very good intro campaign. I very much elaborated on the Ruins of Thundertree quest recreating the entire forest with tabletop terrain and an almost exact scale war gaming mat I have from other games.

It was epic. DND is awesome. My groups been having a blast.

We've got a few more sessions to wrap up before summer, then take a break with potentially some one shots sprinkled in, and then pick back up in the fall. I've got big plans for this campaign and will attempt to branch out on my own without following a source book to closely.

I have fond memories of playing DND in college, and never got back into it again.

Of course it was drunken DND. But I remember the adventures of my drunken, evil chaotic Dwarf Warrior who was constantly trying to betray his other party members to get the best loot. The best weapon that I ever found was an overpowered living evil rope that we'd just throw into a room like a grenade, or I would tuck it into a companions sleeping bag and sit back and laugh as it slowly strangled them until they gave me loot.

I also remember one night hating a call by the DM, and challenging him to a fight, which is equivalent to fighting a god. And that was the end of my DND adventure.

This is just like me. I started a new group in Jan and I'm running LMoP. There have been a few side stories that are not in the book but we have fun. We should be wrapping up in the next couple weeks. Once that is done I am starting my own story that they are already pretty excited for so fingers crossed.

How did the other party members not put a lighting bolt in your head first?

I wish I knew.

Maybe I was too good at killing things in, but on both sides.
