Calgary Expo

Anyone going this year? Adam Savage, Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd will be there (Charlie Cox cancelled boo).

Also some voice actors of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Hazbin Hotel too, I want to go to the Avatar 20th anniversary cast panel.

Silverstone out now as well due to filming commitments. What the heck? I'm going down on Calgary, but both panels I wanted to see are kaput. The only other guests I'm interested in is Dafne Keen and Michael J Fox, but those panels are on different days. It's ridiculous how many guests cancel last minute.

I get that they have schedules and filming and stuff but what I don't understand how those commitments are so set in stone.

I imagine the conversation should be: "We need _______ to arrive on set on Saturday" and their agent says "They already committed to a con on Saturday, they'll come Sunday first thing".

Disappointing their fans seems counter intuitive.

Right, and I get your point, but I think the fact that a film set has hundreds of people on it and deadlines, etc. makes it more difficult to just delay a day. Thats a huge amount of money.

As I also understand it, it's partially contractual. I worked for the Expo for a while, and the actors all work/appear on contracts. The contracts tend to stipulate that the show is put first above all else.

So if an actor is under contract to a show or movie, their Expo contract almost always had a clause to give them an 'out' of the Expo contract if the show called them in to work.

This bit is more anecdotal, but I'd often heard that was/is the only way to get some folks to show up at a Con, as actors simply won't risk their "bread and butter" contracts for Con money, so if you don't give them an out if needed, they simply won't even TRY to come.

I could see that. That makes sense.

I went 2 years in a row to the Fan Expo in Vancouver, which I am assuming this is the same company that does the Calgary Expo. I enjoy them looking at the costumes and seeing some of the different stations, but it also does kind of feel like you are paying $50 just for the right to go in and shop.

Depends on the guests I guess, I got waaay more out of the guests last year than this year so maybe isn't as good a value for me, but still will enjoy it.

TBH I think I like Otafest better.
