It is funny reading all these takes that were WAY off base on what Holloway could ever be. The kid just put up 26 goals and 63 points in 77 games as a 23 year old.
Would have been a perfect fit for what the Flames are building.

Shows how poorly the Oilers handled him and his contract

Flames didn't have the 3rd as it was tied up, it is interesting thought experiment in hindsight whether you use a 2nd on Holloway or that 2nd on Frost and Farrabee.

I would have done the 2nd for Holloway.
As for the Frost trade, they had other available assets

I certainly ended up on the wrong side of this one (though even I was on board in the third round bracket if the Flames had theirs available). Thing is, though, Holloway was pretty fortunate in terms of percentages. By far the best personal and on-ice sh% of his career, and well above the league average in both categories.
It'll be interesting to see what he does next year, when those likely regress.

As someone mentioned, as it turned out, perhaps an offer sheet from Calgary would have actually helped the Oilers. They'd have matched and kept those guys, and not signed the aging near-useless players they did.

I thought the greasers signed the useless guys first, thereby putting them in a position where they could not match.

That's true that those guys were signed earlier. I recall they could afford (barely) to match, partly because they'd traded Ceci and cut Foegele and Macloed loose.

They cleared enough space to match both and decided to get an extra 4th instead of matching

The Ceci trade made it seem like they cleared space to match, instead they got Ty "Norris" Emberson the sneaky good trade.
The Oilers summer was hilarious to look back on.
They had no GM so the president went on a free agent spending spree on worse players. Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner. They traded one of their better young players in McLeod for a prized prospect Savoie.
After that we got told it was the summer of Jeff Jackson and he should be GM, but they still brought in a despicable human Stan Bowman because he had to go away and get therapy to learn how not to hide sexual abuse.
Fans and media in Edmonton told us how the historic PK was not because of the players they lost.
They finished 16th in PK.
I was wrong on Holloway, but he probably doesn't get the same results here. Broberg had asked for a trade prior to getting in the lineup and never rescinded his request.
Young fast emerging players out. Old slow injured players in.

In hindsight maybe the Flames should have signed him to an offer sheet but I feel the Oilers would have probably matched just to spite the Flames and the player. If they didn't and things play out well for Holloway in Calgary, it would have likely meant the Oilers would go after the next promising Flames RFA as retribution.

If they didn't have space I wonder what moves they possibly could have made. Probably someone ends up on LTIR.

And all things being equal I don't think Holloway signs in Calgary if he has options elsewhere (St. Louis).

Well the Flames signed Mantha to build up his value to trade, so if he looked at us, he probably doesn't see the opportunity to play meaningful minutes.
The whole point was he was looking for a bigger role along with Broberg.
Huberdeau, Mantha, Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Coronato, Coleman, Zary, Pospisil on teh depth chart.

Yeah, I don't think he's looking at the Flames and thinking there's no opportunity there.
I mean, every team in the league can list 8 wingers (or 12), that doesn't mean much

I don't think he wanted to actively tick his former team off more than required.

based on anything, or are you just speculating?
he signed an offer sheet - he knew they were going to be ticked off
