Plus, retribution from Oilers is not likely. They are cap constrained like crazy and that is only getting worse.
If you are smart with assets, it’s unlikely you’ll ever have to worry about retribution.

are you of the opinion he doesn't sign if it was a different team?

That's a really simplistic way of looking at. Did anyone but the Blues offer him a contract?

Do you really think the Oilers wouldn’t have matched if it was the Flames?

We can't know obviously. But it isn't junior high, they are trying to manage their team to be as competitive as possible. The price wasn't even that high, so they weren't too concerned about signing him. And they spent what little cap space they had on Jeff MFing Skinner

We don't even know the Blues were the only team to make him an offer. We do know the Blues' offer was the one he signed. The Flames would presumably have had to top that offer, putting them in territory where the compensation would have been a 2nd… and I don't think he pots anywhere near 63 points in a defence-first system like Calgary's. Can't blame them too hard for passing.

No I'm of the opinion that multiple teams were talking to he agent about an offersheet...we only hear about offer sheets that are signed

you've made multiple assumptions here, but I'll just address one - I think they could have offered more and still be within the comp window for the 3rd (I don't remember, but I don't think they offered max amount for a 3rd.
That brings up an interesting question though: do teams know what has been offered by others? I presume not. I assume each team would have to make their offer with a blind bid

sure, but that tells us nothing
the Blues weren't a playoff team last year - if there were multiple offers (that claim was never made by the media), I doubt he is choosing STL, based on the city.

The offer from the Blues was the exact maximum for a 3rd: $2,290,457. I checked.
The combined offers to Broberg and Holloway were designed to make it as hard as possible for the Oilers to match without giving up a first in compensation – and also to make it impossible for any other team to make a better offer without going up to the next compensation bracket. Apparently nobody thought it was worth giving up a 2nd + cap space for Holloway, or a 1st + 3rd + cap space for Broberg.

I don't ever recall seeing any such rule. What I do know is that there is no rule requiring a team to make only one bid. If an agent receives an offer and says, ‘Not enough,’ the team can always make a better offer.

I don't recall ever hearing from the media about any offer made to an RFA unless the RFA actually signed the offer sheet. Players are free to turn down offers.

Yeah, I assume it's like UFAs in the summer. You can ask the agent, but you have to take what they tell you with a grain of salt. And sure, if they don't bite on your first offer, I presume you can re-up.

Its been reported that 3 teams wanted to offersheet both, Blues were the preferred destination. Calgary was one of the three according to Jeff Marek and others.
There is a TON of speculation before and after the Flames were involved and trying to get picks back

It came out that the Flames were interested, but I don't think we know if they actually submitted offers.
Also, we have no idea what any other offers were (if there were any)
Claiming 'Blues were the preferred destination' is a big assumption

Its a direct quote from Jeff Marek who likely has some solid sources, dont shoot the messenger
"3 teams"
"Flames were one of them"
"Blues preferred destination"
Flames are on every no trade, have the oldest arena, and were expected to be bottom feeders...hardly a stretch to think a player might chose the Blues.

sure, but 1) despite sources, these guys still have to surmise some things, and 2) you're assuming a fair bit beyond what is said there
this happens all the time here, when people quote rumours - a lot gets assumed, and a lot gets turned into 'facts' (not directing this at you)

Im not assuming anything just saying what has been reported. They chose the Blues offer over anything the Oilers were offering. If their agent was doing his job it would have been known they were open for business.
