It's 6 spots though, we would have 16-18 in your scenario. Also, the panthers pick is definitely going to be lower than 22.
It's moot, but this is similar take to saying the club is a constant mushy middle performer independent of roster spending.

Monkey's paw moment- I am thinking you meant Kent Nilsson but instead the flames will draft a Marcus Nilson.

Yeah it was 1 Year of Monahan @ $6M + 1st for Kadri at $7M x 7 years.
In the end as a trade at that time that would look fair, even though it was selling absolutely low on Monahan who has proven to be a more valuable player than what the Flames moved on from once he was actually given time to heal.

In hindsight, it looks worse because Monahan went on to have a very effective season and actually got Montreal another 1st rounder. I mean, it's pretty hilarious actually because there was concern that Monahan's injuries might make it hard for him to ever be as productive again and then he went on to play 83 regular season games in a season. It's just one more way the hockey goods love to kick us in the nuts any chance they get.
It would have been nice to sign Kadri and keep Monohan, but we were screwed cap-wise at the time.

Kadri's contract has been valuable. Another couple years like this and he might be the best free agent signing the team has ever made.
|
Kind of, but all things considered. The Flames would likely be picking in the top ten without Kadri.

I really think they had a deal to move Lucic instead (likely with a 1st) and Lucic blocked it.

Yup, I'm told the Flames have scouted him a lot the last few months, problem is I doubt he'll last to where the Flames pick in the 2nd.
Eric is a younger RS center with nice skills and full of jam, I think he'll go between 25-35 OV but I wouldn't be upset if they reached for him.
Edit, forgot he was actually born in Calgary

But even that is a bit of a weird factor into the outcome for the Flames.
Because Monahan went to UFA, decided to re-sign in Montreal on a really cheap 1 year deal, and then was traded to Winnipeg who overpaid.
If the Flames don't trade Monahan, I highly doubt he's taking a 1 year show me deal with the Flames, it's either a longer term extension here or he's going somewhere else on a 1 year show me deal as a UFA. I don't see a universe where Monahan would have re-signed with the Flames on a one year deal in 23-24 and then would have gotten moved at the deadline.

Not if they don't make the Conference final.
Right now
Winnipeg
Washington
Vegas
Dallas
Los Angeles
Toronto
Tampa Bay
Colorado
Edmonton
Are in front of them. If Ottawa doesnt make the final 4 than their pick is void and Florida's would actually be pick 21 but still 22 overall. If say Columbus/Minnesota/St.Louis makes it, it could get as high as 19.

The Flames winning the lotto and still not getting a top 3 pick would be very on brand.

The Devils and Habs losing in the first round locks in #18 for the Devils' pick.
With Florida winning, they'll be playing either Toronto or Ottawa in the next round, so the Panthers will be going to the Conference Final and their pick will be 29-32.
The Flames have a 1.1% chance of winning the lottery (either draw) and picking 6th. Otherwise, they get Florida's pick.
