I think the Flames throw a big offer at him.
But I don't think he takes it.

I'm totally fine with a season of regression if it leads to a high draft pick as this organization still needs more blue chip prospects.

A lot hangs on Wolf. If he has a sophomore slump it's going to go downhill quick. The same with Kadri although to a lesser extent. As good as he's been this might have easily been his swan song season.

They should sign Taylor Hall, local kid, hope he bounces back like they hoped for Mantha this season. Huge Bonus - Taylor Hall is 1st overall magic so it would all but guarantee the top pick. Give him One year/12 million to assure it.

I was thinking of a roster contest.
Here's what I was thinking;
~Take the roster as it stands from PuckPedia on Thursday.
~The goal is to predict what the 23 man roster will be on opening night
~Deadline for submission is a day or two before the draft (minimize influence from rumours)
~Contestants get;
- 1 point for each player predicted to stay on the roster
- 3 points for each player predicted to be removed from the roster
- 5 points for each player named to be added to the roster
Winner gets a custom user title like '#1 Prognosticator' or 'Conroy's Twin' or maybe winners choice. Someone will have a better idea
I have only put as much thought into this as I've written above. Haven't thought about the mechanics of it and the best way to set it up to make the point calculations simple and accurate at the end. I'm just throwing it out there for someone to run with if it's something people feel they would have fun with. I wouldn't be able to spend enough time on something like this to do it well.

I dont get why we disregard culture so easily.
Would you continue to put your all in at work if the culture fostered a negative and unmotivating environment? Just putting in the motions to get through to the next day?
IMO Team Culture is a major thing to build as well during a rebuild.

Here's my wishful thinking for the offseason:
1. Win the lottery
2. Draft Anton Frondell 6th overall, Ryabkin 18th
3. Trade Andersson, Coleman, and one of Farabee, Sharangovich and Pospisil; Give away Bean, and Miromanov for FC.
4. Sign Gavrikov $7M x 7, Duchene/Giroux $5-7M x 2-3, Lyon $1M x 2.
5. Re-sign Zary($5.5-6.5M x 8), Frost($4.5-5.5M x 3), Coronato($6.5-7M x 7), Klapka ($1M x 2)
6. Leave spots in the lineup open for Parekh, 2F prospects + 1D prospect.

I think the bigger impact will be the D group. If Andersson is traded and Hanley let go then that leaves a very thin group in front of Wolf. If Coleman is also moved, then that will do a lot to reduce the strength of the team defense.

Do you trade Pospisil after a poor year?
Do you keep Klapka?
Do you trade Sharangovich after a poor year?
Do you extend Frost?
Conroy has shown the ability to buy low on players, doubt he sells low on anyone. At some point someone needs to go and with the cap going up I could see Coleman going as his contract is still a + contract.
I also see Huska and Conroy valuing intangibles. Pospisil is a very good skater and good on the forecheck, plays physical. Doubt he moves him for a mid-pick when he brings something to the table most the other guys don't.
There are a few wranglers that deserve a look too. Someone has to go, and a good GM needs to look at Coleman as the best option to move without killing the team. He returns more than most of the other guys in a trade too.
|
My hesitation is the consistent impact him and Backlund have on their line-mates including young players.
I would rather move Pospisil as I think other teams over-value guys like him. Take advantage of that.

Agree on trading any of the older players you can if the returns are decent.
Kadri after a career high in scoring would be smart to trade now.
I expect next season will see the older guys decline & younger guys take over (but not enough to be great yet); so make the trades you can now.

Remain competitive for what a playoff spot? That shouldn't be an issue.
Many hear wanted Backlund relegated to 4th line duty and said him and Coleman actively cost us games because they didn't score enough.
Backlund is getting old, and his play is going to start to taper off, it is time for the safety valve be taken away from the team.
The younger guys need to step up and be the vets going forward.
Thinking this is a playoff team, and there is a lot of progression left next season would be a big miscalculation.
You already have Dino talking about Parekh like he will win the Norris, while he has been vehemently against him being put in the lineup these last 4 games because he isn't ready for the NHL.
We also don't have much in the pipeline in terms for skilled forwards, obviously at center.

The team is not good enough for POs, so what's the plan? Looks like all teams will be better next season so if the team wants to compete they need improve the roster too.
Or they can trade a couple assets for draft picks and stay on course?

Not sure how being aggressive and all in to build a winner would be unmotivating and negative.
Las Vegas has tossed players like garbage, and they remain at the top of the division with a cup.
Winnning and being an annual playoff participant is the culture we need, not being the nice guys and hanging on to guys.

Here are my predictions:
1. Flames attempt to sign andersson to a ludicrous contract extension. Fortunately for us, Andersson declines. Flames keep him until end of season anyways.
2. FLA-NJD Conference final means our picks are in the bottom 1/4 of the 1st. We get Jack Nesbitt and Malcolm Spence
3. The flames go hard after Bennett in the offseason, but end up a bridesmaid. Instead, we sign Ehlers to a 8 year contract.
4. Parekh starts on the bottom pairing. Sometimes sits for Hanley.
5. The flames start strong and fall back by christmas. Spend the rest of the season talking about how we're close to the playoffs and deserve to fight for the guys. Trade the lower of our 1sts before the trade deadline for a journeyman LD.
6. Miss Playoffs.

Make some trades and ship out the veterans. Play more youth next season.
I hope Conroy learned a great lesson after I feel he didn't capitalize on the trade deadline prices. A new GM, so hopefully he learned something around asset management that can work for him in the future.
I also have a feeling the Flames may acquire Trevor Zegras.

Not a chance we get close to this for Andersson if we have the temerity to trade him. I highly doubt that is the case though.

Bourque! Using the offer sheet to get him for a 2nd is good value (trading for him would likely cost more) and he can slot in as 3C with potential to go up the lineup as he continues to develop beyond his rookie season.
An argument could also be made for Zary being that guy. Him getting injured just as we were starting to see what he could do at C is unfortunate.

How about the late season next-gear development of Klapka hey? This is fun to watch. An impactful 6'8" two-way winger with some skill is something this team can absolutely use going forward. Finally starting to use his size and develop a mean streak too.

Why do folk think Coronato is getting millions more than Sharangovich per season. Production is similar
